Will this work with the new iPad Pro?

No the smart connectors are on the back of the new 2018 iPad pro the older pros connectors are along the side edge

Once charged does the iPad sit safely in portrait mode so as to use as a normal stand?

I would not risk it, i have a 10.5,the plastic holder with the 3 pin smart connection holds great in landscape,but not enough lip to keep the ipad in place in portrait as no 3 pin connection with magnet ,it will fall off when touching the screen,also 3 pins on logi are raised brass smart connection,and would mark ipad if not on 3 pin connection on ipad

As long as your device has smart connector , it will work . My iPad Pro 10.5” charging port got damaged . Very expensive to repair . I have been using Logitech for a year . Perfect .
