K&F CONCEPT 39mm Variable ND Filter ND2-400 1-9 Stops with Cleaning Cloth

Here is an honest review of another one of my K&F purchases: the Variable ND2-400 Nano K series filter 82mm thread. As with most K&F products, I have found them to be remarkably effective and well priced; this is no different. If like me you’ve ever tried to shoot wide open on a blindingly bright afternoon or wanted to get that silky-smooth water look on a local stream, you know the struggle. You either end up with images that look like a nuclear flash went off, or you’re forced to hike your shutter speed into outer space. I picked up this K&F Nano-K Variable ND2-400 to regain control of my exposure, and it has quickly become my absolute favorite piece of glass to twist onto the front of my lens. Here is why it’s earned a permanent home in my kit bag: Mind-Blowing Versatility: Having an ND2 to ND400 all in one single filter is pure wizardry. Instead of carrying a pouch full of individual solid glass squares and constantly swapping them out with freezing fingers, I just screw this filter on and twist the ring. Need to cut just a touch of light? Done. Want to turn a midday waterfall into misty velvet? Twist it all the way down and boom—instant long exposure. The "X-Mark" Ghost is Gone (Mostly!): Variable NDs are notorious for showing a nasty dark "X" across your photos when you push them too far. K&F did some real homework on the coatings here. As long as you stay within the marked boundaries on the rim, the light distribution is incredibly even. If you crank it past the maximum limit on an ultra-wide lens, you might see a tiny bit of shading, but used properly? It’s as clean as a whistle and to be honest I haven't noticed any issues but in fairness I haven't used it in every conceivable situation so your results may vary slightly. Zero Muckiness: Just like my other Nano-K filters, the sharpness stays crisp. I was worried it would turn my images into a muddy, colour-shifted mess, but my shots are still razor-sharp and for someone of my limited capabilities I find it works fine. Smooth as Butter: The rotation of the ring has just the right amount of resistance. It feels premium—not loose and sloppy, so it won't accidentally shift if you bump it while adjusting your framing, just make sure you turn it the opposite way you would tighten the filter on to the lens. One little heads-up: Because the front element of a variable ND has to be slightly larger to prevent your corners from going dark, your standard lens cap might not fit over it perfectly. I tend to buy the largest I think I will need and with this one I have purchased the K&F 82mm lens cap which works perfectly. The test shots I have included are taken with a Sony A6700 & Vitrox 33mm f1.4 lens at 1/125, ISO 100, 33mm and show the filter ranging from its brightest to its darkest, which is pure black in my test. It was taken inside so results may differ outside where there is brighter light but you can get the general idea. So, if you want to play with motion blur or shoot beautiful, shallow depth-of-field images in broad daylight without breaking the bank, this thing is worth every single penny. Happy shooting!

While this is expected to some extent with variable ND filters, it's worth mentioning for those seeking the highest level of image sharpness. In conclusion, the K&F Concept 82mm Variable ND Filter from the Nano-K Series is an excellent investment for any outdoor photographer. The K&F Concept 72mm Variable ND Filter ND2–ND400 is an excellent budget-friendly option for photographers and videographers. It offers a wide 1–9 stop range, making it perfect for long exposures and smooth cinematic video in bright light . Build quality is solid with smooth rotation and decent optical clarity for the price. It performs well for everyday use, though at higher settings you may notice slight image softness or colour shift (common with variable ND filters). Overall, a versatile and affordable filter that delivers great results without breaking the bank — ideal for beginners and casual creators.

The K&F Concept ND Filters offer exceptional value for their price. They are made with high-quality materials, providing a durable and sturdy build. The rotation mechanism is smooth, allowing for easy adjustment without any issues of accidental movement. When it comes to image quality, the filters deliver excellent results, seamlessly adapting to the lens without causing any vignetting. While there may be a slight "x" effect if the maximum limit is exceeded, this is a known limitation and doesn't pose a significant problem. This filter is amazing. If you are looking for variable filter the look no further. From the quality to the performance this thing does it well. The manner in which it reduces the glare from the sun or the ability to go wide open in bright sunlight is amazing, it does so beautifully without adding vignettes in the images. You can do so much with these, be it shooting in bright daylight, doing long exposure. The glass itself is quite good it also gives you that layer of lens protection. The price, the make and the quality makes this a must have.

As you can see image quality In photo NO1, is fine Without Variable K&F Concept ND Filter on my 300mm Lens set to F8. You can now easily see image degradation in image quality In photo NO2, With Variable K&F Concept ND Filter applied on my 300mm Lens set to F8. The results were shocking beyond belief so I have returned the product. They must have sent me a faulty copy because nothing is this bad. I had the same results on my 180mm lens set to F/8. You can see photo number 3 without filter and photo number 4 with filter and a severely degraded image. Why is this? I do not know. I purchased a Tiffen Variable ND filter 5 years ago and had no degradation of image quality and wanted to try this cheaper version after seeing some YouTube video reviews showing them as ok. I am absolutely shocked by the results. I am curious to know if I am just the unlucky one who received a faulty filter

It does the job however you should consider the lens and the strength of the adjustment. On the side there is a min - max dial, when setting it to or near max, on some lenses there is some vignetting that seems to be stronger in one corner than the others. I tested it with a 16-50mm lens and a 30mm macro lens and a 56mm lens on an APS-C camera. the 16-50mm lens when set to 16mm had the worst vignetting when the nd filter was set to max, when set to or near min it looked ok.

I usually work with Lee and NiSi filters but wanted to try out this budget filter because of the good reviews. I work with video and use variable ND filters for convenience. Sure, there is a color cast but this is not unique for this filter and can be solved by taking custom white balance AFTER the filter is on. Also there is some vignetting (at wide focal lengths) and softening but again this is not unusual for these kind of filters. I think this filter is good value for money and definitely useful in many camera bags.
