This phrase is repeated throughout the entire set of ten seasons and two-hundred or more instalments. You see, not every operation has a happy outcome. And not every patient's relatives are understanding: they expect miracles and the cast of surgeons have to stand in line and take the criticism and threats of litigation. But over the ten seasons, which we set ourselves the target of viewing in less than a month (phew!), our residents have mostly matured into responsible heroes/survivors. The whole series is viewed from a group of interns and their mentors as well as a succeeding generation of interns, the trials and tribulations of their relationships, and an almost unbearably rapacious sexual hunger that is often more akin to desperation rather than real love. But American film sex is a long way from European sex: they have to wear clothes to maintain some unreal standard of decency. Viewing this entire series has been more than an epic but, making allowances for the impracticality of such detail as nursing staff, who would undoubtedly been expected to provide the unflappable resource of sense and reliability, makes some sort of sense in a world that we admire even though the service they provide is something we most unfairly take for granted.
