Steel is firmly attached to the handle which is indented with a useful thumb grip. Ignited a tinder based fire with ease. Compass is a good addition, however the one I received had an air bubble inside the unit rendering it virtually useless. Whistle is not the loudest. The saw edge side of the striker is rather small but sharp enough to use. Would have given 5 stars but for the compass problem. Did not attempt getting a replacement as the main reason for purchase was the fire steel. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very impressed at this low price *by E***J on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 June 2012* The firesteel produces nice bright (hot) sparks. It didn't for the first few strikes but you have to remove the protective layer of paint first.The compass is small but serviceable, certainly a nice idea to have a back-up in the firesteel base.The ruler is only 20mm in length and therefore of limited use but perhaps might be useful.The saw is also only 20mm in length and is pathetic. I tried to saw through a small piece of soft wood (20mm*10mm pine) and soon gave up, the saw was making almost no progress through it further than the initial dent impression.The whistle isn't the loudest or the easiest to get a whistle out of but I consider it a 'freebie' with the firesteel.I've not used the firesteel enough yet to comment on its longevity but so far I have no reason to doubt its quality.I'm not going to mark this product down for the 'extras' as I consider them to be freebies. The firesteel itself and the compass are worth 5 stars.When I placed this review the cost was a little under £6 including postage. I think I'm going to stop putting "great price" in my reviews because it seems a little too coincidental that just after I do so the supplier puts the price up! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Brilliant little firesteel. Can't fault it! *by A***R on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 November 2015* I've been using this firesteel for a couple of months now on an almost daily basis and it never fails me. I have colleagues who have their own (various different makes) but actually opt to use mine as it is so good. The extras don't really matter to me but the whistle and compass do work if needed. One key bonus for me is the fact that this firesteel is really comfortable to hold and easy to get a good grip of due to the thumb hold indents on both parts. When you're out on a wet day and it's taking you a little longer to light any kindling it really makes a difference to have that extra comfort. Great little firesteel that's really reliable. I work with teenagers who, with other firesteels in the past, have given up when they can't get a flame. With this one however it gets the job done quickly and before they get to the point of frustration.
