Stuck between a rock and a hard place, I found that if I didn't use the spray my nasal passages would just become congested, but prolonged use obliterated my sense of smell, made my nose bleed and, after a dose of antibiotics for a sinus infection, gave me oral thrush. I know how much water I need, boil it for 4 mins in a pan, rinse the pot with the hot water, leave the rest to cool for 30 mins, dissolve the saline and do the nasal rinse, and finally rinse the pot with the remaining boiled water. My problem was essentially a permanently blocked left nostril/sinus. Nose would drip, I would struggle to sleep and no amount of blowing my nose would clear it and it was becoming quite debilitating. Neil med contains 2.0 g of sodium plus not-listed baking soda. To be isotonic with the blood's usual max. of 0.145M sodium concentration, there should be a max. of 2.01 g of sodium per 8 fluid oz. of water (yes, I am a certified master chemist with a graduate degree from IIT). Overdoing it by 15% -as is done here- should be negligible and possibly beneficial since it would tend to make blood vessels push out liquid and reduce pressure but it's probably dilute enough to not have any effect. Note that 0.7 g of baking soda increases the molar concentration of sodium by only 0.02, which is negligible. **Q: My Doctor said just use distilled water and not saline. Does anyone else do that?** A: I use distilled water and one packet of powder which has all the impurities removed already for you. Good luck ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Portable and practical *by H***E on 26 October 2009* Took me a little while to get the hand of pouring water up one nostril and watching it dribble down the other, but now it's a cinch. I don't use the pot every day, but fairly often, and find it helpful in keeping my nose clear for breathing. I agree with the other reviewer who says it doesn't clear your sinuses as such. It clears your nose. But that has a knock-on effect on the sinuses. It's handy for travelling, being small and lightweight. I've not managed to buy kosher or pickling salt, even on a trip to a Jewish area of London, but somehow I doubt if I'll be buying tiny sachets of salt on a regular basis. I intend to combine this with using a humidifier when I can afford one, Medisana Ultrabreeze is the name that springs to mind, it's on amazon. This type of product is recommended in the Harvard guide to sinus care book, also avaialable on this site.
