Review: Goodbye to nasal sprays - This is one amazing product. I have suffered with rhinitis for several years and have been using a steroid nasal spray on and off for 18 months. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, I found that if I didn't use the spray my nasal passages would just become congested, but prolonged use obliterated my sense of smell, made my nose bleed and, after a dose of antibiotics for a sinus infection, gave me oral thrush. Desperate for something that would relieve the congestion without the side effects of prolonged steroid medication, I decided to try the Neti Pot. Within a few days, I could breathe through my nose, my sense of smell returned, the nasal bleeding stopped and I didn't miss the burning bitter taste of steroids at the back of my throat. I used it once a day for about two weeks and now find that I can get away with using it every 2-3 days without any real return of symptoms. I was afraid I would not like the sensation of pouring fluid up my nose, and nervous about infection, but it is quite easy to use and not as bad as you imagine. I find half a sachet of saline per nostril is enough. it can be tricky at first trying to resist the urge to swallow when you feel water up your nose but it is not an unpleasant experience. It goes wrong occasionally: sometimes it trickles down the throat, and sometimes it runs down your face, but minor issues. If you swallow a bit, it's only salt water; it just disrupts the flow a bit! The biggest problem I have had is that I live in an extremely hard water area. Boiled tap water develops a particulate scum on it which I was not happy about putting up my nose. Sterile water or saline was going to be too expensive to use regularly, but I eventually found that supermarket brand value mineral water does the job - sterilised, of course, and at 17p for 2 litres lasts a few days and is cost effective. It takes a little bit of forward planning but I have a routine now. I know how much water I need, boil it for 4 mins in a pan, rinse the pot with the hot water, leave the rest to cool for 30 mins, dissolve the saline and do the nasal rinse, and finally rinse the pot with the remaining boiled water. Anyone fed up with endless steroid use would be well advised to give this a try. I cannot rate it highly enough.
Review: Fantastic product - Hi – I don’t normally do product reviews, but I was so impressed with this product that I thought I would share my experiences. My problem was essentially a permanently blocked left nostril/sinus. Nose would drip, I would struggle to sleep and no amount of blowing my nose would clear it and it was becoming quite debilitating. Had tried several remedies (menthol crystals, Beconaise etc) but no improvement. A course of antibiotics gave me a period of 3 to 4 weeks of relief before it returned. My GP had suggested the Neti pot, but I hadn’t really given it serious consideration. I had decided to revisit my GP to argue for a referral to a specialist, but realised that the first question that they would ask would be had I tried the Neti Pot. I realised that I wouldn’t be going to see any specialist without giving it a try. I made the purchase from desertcart, but hand on heart didn’t think it would make any difference. It arrived and after just two days I was clear. I was amazed, as were family and work colleagues. I was now cured and stopped the douching! Within 4 days the problem was back. I restarted daily douching and within two days was again clear. I have continued with the douching, now every other day, and remain clear of my problem. I can’t recommend it enough and if you have this type of problem just give it a trial. Hopefully you will experience the results that I have. A couple of tips, 1) I just use ½ of the sachet in the pot and find that it is enough. 2) Stick with it. To start with it’s quite difficult to get you head at the right angle for the solution to flow. Eventually you do master the technique though. 3) Be patient. I find that it takes a minute or so for the flow to come out through the other nostril. 4) Make sure that your nostrils are clear before douching. I found that a shower (or a jog) helped clear my nose and made the douching more effective. After a couple of days the nose is clear and you can dispense with the shower/jog! 5) Have good hygiene. Use boiled water for the solution, but also pour boiling water into pot before use and over the spout. Repeat after you have used it. 6) I now have it down to such a fine art that I can do it during the commercial breaks on TV, so it isn’t a massive imposition on your time. Good luck

## Questions & Answers

**Q: No one has posted a straight answer to this. what is the amoung of product in each envelope? the neil med product packs 3 grams (3000 mg).**
A: These contain 2.3 g of sodium and 0.7 g of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) per packet. Neil med contains 2.0 g of sodium plus not-listed baking soda.
To be isotonic with the blood's usual max. of 0.145M sodium concentration, there should be a max. of 2.01 g of sodium per 8 fluid oz. of water (yes, I am a certified master chemist with a graduate degree from IIT). Overdoing it by 15% -as is done here- should be negligible and possibly beneficial since it would tend to make blood vessels push out liquid and reduce pressure but it's probably dilute enough to not have any effect. Note that 0.7 g of baking soda increases the molar concentration of sodium by only 0.02, which is negligible.

**Q: My Doctor said just use distilled water and not saline. Does anyone else do that?**
A: I use distilled water and one packet of powder which has all the impurities removed already for you. All other water (such as bottled or boiled water) feels like I'm just snorting pool water up my nose; it burns like heck even with trying two packets in it. And yes, if you use plain old tap water, Google WebMD for the 2018 case of a Seattle lady who died from a brain-eating amoeba from irrigating her sinuses with tap water in her nettie pot instead of distilled water.

**Q: Can you place the entire unit into the dishwasher?**
A: I unfortunately didn't read beforehand and the dishwasher ruined mine. On the top rack as well. Don't be like me!

**Q: Can you use Alkalol with this?**
A: Neti pots & other nasal irrigation devicesMany people use Alkalol in neti pots and other rinse devices. Some tips to remember:An Alkalol Nasal Wash Cup holds 1 fluid ounce. Many neti pots hold 8 fl oz. Simply follow the directions above, adjusting the amount accordingly. When using a neti pot, or other large-volume irrigation device, we recommend mixing Alkalol with a salt water solution instead of plain water to ensure the best experience. Too much plain water in the mix can cause a burning sensation.Wash and dry your hands before using your nasal rinse device and make sure you clean and dry your nasal rinse device before and after use.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Portable and practical
*by H***E on 26 October 2009*

Took me a little while to get the hand of pouring water up one nostril and watching it dribble down the other, but now it's a cinch. I don't use the pot every day, but fairly often, and find it helpful in keeping my nose clear for breathing. I agree with the other reviewer who says it doesn't clear your sinuses as such. It clears your nose. But that has a knock-on effect on the sinuses. It's handy for travelling, being small and lightweight. I've not managed to buy kosher or pickling salt, even on a trip to a Jewish area of London, but somehow I doubt if I'll be buying tiny sachets of salt on a regular basis. I intend to combine this with using a humidifier when I can afford one, Medisana Ultrabreeze is the name that springs to mind, it's on amazon. This type of product is recommended in the Harvard guide to sinus care book, also avaialable on this site. I think the approach to sinus care needs to have several strands if it is to be effective long-term.
