The tbar used to move the popcorn around does not touch the base so will not affect the coating.Thanks **Q: Can you use butter inside the machine? Also is the glass safe to touch when it's hot? Because you have to flip it,right..** A: Instruction give details for using butter. The casing is plastic not glass - it does get hot. But when finished popping you clip the top lid in place and there are handles to invert the top half of the unit. The base which contains the heating element remain static. **Q: can you make different variations i.e sugar,butter or kernel seasoning?** A: Yes - you can put whatever you want in.Salt and seasonings are easy as it can go in at the beginning and works perfectly. For sugar, I've found it's best to go in at the end as it can burn and taste slightly unpleasant - altho there is a debate in our house about that.There is a melted butter dispenser in the cap which works automatically once temperature has been met.It took just a little experimentation but I can not recommend this popcorn maker highly enough. Our luck changed when we bought this Halogen machine from JM Posner. The machine arrived in two days, very well packed in an outer box and then in its own box. The machine is bigger than the picture on Amazon led us to believe, it can cook from two to six ounces of excellent popcorn in about three minutes and six ounces is a lot of popcorn and would do a family of six.The advantage of this machine over hot air is that the corn is cooked using a small amount of oil - we use pure coconut oil which gives the corn a fabulous flavour. We also use a small amount of salt which is poured onto to corn before popping . The machine is very easily cleaned as it has a non- stick surface on the heated tray. It is a very light machine and should be handled with care but having said that it will last for years if treated gently. The instruction manual is simple and straight to the point it gives the recommended amount of corn and oil to use which worked to perfection for us. Buy one today, you won't regret it.
