Sony 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS E-Mount Telephoto Zoom Lens for APS-C Mirrorless Cameras – Ideal for Sports, Wildlife, and Travel Photography

I've been using this lens for a few weeks now and so far so good! I'm no professional photographer and only take photos as a hobby, however, there's very little I can fault with this lens from my experience. The photos attached are all taken with this lens on a Sony A5000 camera, not the best camera in the world but I love the photos I managed to take with it. Good things: Solid build quality, very well made. Takes great photos at far zooms. Focuses fast (most of the time). Has good stabilisation even at maximum zoom. Less good things: On occasion I've been completely unable to focus on certain things no matter how much I try, I'm sure this could be fixed with manual focus but autofocus just couldn't get it, When the lens hood is on it can be fiddly to get the lens cap back on securely without removing the lens hood, Very niche issue here but whilst I was at the Eden project, the rainforest biome is extremely humid and the lens completely steamed up, could wipe it off but worth noting if you're planning to use in extremely humid environments Apart from a few minor flaws, everything else is absolutely perfect and amazing value for money! Would definitely recommend.

Great value lens using on my Sony A7 Cii works well

This lens is a decent and compact zoom option. However, be cautious with the silver model, as its surface is prone to scratches. The Optical SteadyShot (OSS) performance is excellent and comparable to more expensive lenses. Although the aperture is relatively small and the bokeh isn't exceptional, the overall image quality is good. If you can find this lens for under £140 during a Sony cashback promotion, it's a great deal. For best results, avoid pushing the lens to its limits. I recommend choosing the black version over the silver for better cosmetic durability.

Good quality lens especially for the price

This lens doesn't always get the best reviews on utube and other reviewing sites so I was quite wary about buying it. I''m glad I did. I can't see how you could expect more for the price. The pictures I took straight out of the box were absolutely fine, and anyone who needs a telephoto lens without breaking the bank should get it. Easily worth the money.

This lens is a must have addition to the NEX lens line up and unlike the 18-200 variants it does not cost too much. Build quality and general feel of the lens is excellent and the compact diameter means that the supplied kit flash does not cast a shadow. The only problem I have is getting the plastic hood which is supplied with it to fit properly / easily because it's a very tight fit. I have instead reverted to a generic rubber hood instead. This lens is probably the most comfortable to handle on the camera. If you want low light performance however then this is not the quickest, but you are unlikely to want it for those reasons. Recommended purchase if you are serious about the NEX platform.

I got this Sony 50- 210 on a Black Friday deal, a third of what i paid for the Sony 70-350 which i returned because i couldn't justify the cost. In good light it makes a good image. The Robin photo was taken at the full 210mm f6.3.

I dithered for ages before eventually buying this lens for a holiday to Costa Rica. I used it on a Sony A6500. In the end it was the right choice because I got some good wildlife shots but it was hard work. The good points: Small and light, solid construction, no zoom creep, potentially good Image quality (but see caveat below), supplied hood, convenient filter size (49mm), excellent zoom range especially on a crop-frame body, fast to focus on the a6500, even on full zoom. Very good price. The less good points: Slow maximum aperture at the 210mm end (f6.3) and image quality distinctly soft at the maximum aperture (many other reviewers have mentioned this). What this all means is that to get the best out of this lens you need to discipline yourself to use a max aperture of f8 - not that easy in the low light of a jungle - which means a high ISO is needed as well. Above f7.1 I found Image quality tightens up considerably. In the jungle I also had the additional factor of leaves and branches fooling the autofocus, but that could affect any lens and was largely a matter of setting up the AF correctly. So, choose the camera to partner this lens with care - not necessarily one at a comparable price point. Other reviewers have given this lens a low points score mainly because of the shortcomings I have mentioned. On balance I think the design is basically good for a travel lens, even the slow max aperture, as this largely determines its useful small size. What would get it 5 stars from me is a mark 2 version with good image quality when wide open.

Uso questo obiettivo montato su Sony A6000 e lo porto con me in situazioni molto diverse — natura, ritratti, soggetti lontani, un po' di tutto. È esattamente il tipo di ottica che ti aspetti di avere sempre in borsa come secondo obiettivo dopo il kit 16-50mm. La qualità delle immagini è ottima: nitide, stabili, con una resa del bokeh piacevole grazie al diaframma a 7 lamelle circolare. Lo stabilizzatore OSS fa il suo lavoro in modo silenzioso ed efficace, specialmente a 210 mm dove la mano ferma è praticamente impossibile. Le due lenti ED riducono sensibilmente le aberrazioni cromatiche anche ai bordi dell'inquadratura. È leggero, compatto e non appesantisce la borsa. Per un'ottica tele di questa fascia di prezzo su sistema E-Mount, il rapporto qualità/prezzo è difficile da battere. Unica nota: come tutti i tele con apertura f/6.3 al massimo dello zoom, in condizioni di bassa luce bisogna alzare gli ISO. Non è un difetto di questo obiettivo in particolare, è semplicemente la fisica delle ottiche tele economiche — meglio saperlo prima. Consigliato a chiunque abbia una Sony APS-C E-Mount e cerchi un tele affidabile senza spendere cifre importanti. 🎯

Great lens for the money.

It is a great lens for beginners, good for portrait, wildlife and animal photography for small distances, oss is also good. Retains sharpness after cropping. However due to aperture low light photography can be difficult (eg in cloudy weather).

Cet objectif correspond pleinement à mes souhaits, à savoir performant sur ses qualités optique et mécanique, bon piqué d'image ,mise au point relativement rapide,construction correcte. J'apprécie beaucoup sa légereté et son rapport de zoom qui me permet de développer ma créativité de cadrage et me fait découvrir mon NEX3 sous un autre angle! De plus le rapport qualité prix est au rendez vous pas déçu de cet achat reconditionné par Amazon, Mon porte monaie s'en réjouit encore...

Ich möchte hier nur eine kurze, eher subjektive Bewertung mit den wichtigsten mir aufgefallenen Punkten geben. Tiefergehende Tests mit technischen Messwerten gibt es im Netz. Verarbeitung: Einwandfrei, nichts klappert oder wackelt, einzig die Sonnenblende könnte vielleicht noch etwas hochwertiger und ggf. mit Innenriffelung zur weiteren Reduzierung von Reflektionen sein. Das Metallgehäuse erscheint wertig und relativ robust. Handling: Das Gewicht ist für so ein Objektiv m.E. nach absolut angemessen. Es liegt gut in der Hand, ist nicht zu schwer und nicht zu leicht. Zoom- und Fokusring haben einen Gummibeschichtung, die zwar griffig ist, aber leider auch recht gut Schmutz anzieht (und nicht so leicht wieder loslässt). Beim Blick durch den Sucher sind Zoom- und Fokusring haptisch leider nicht so gut zu unterscheiden, so dass man sich da schon mal vertun kann. Funktion: Beim Zoomen fährt das Objektiv vorn ein Stück aus, dreht sich dabei aber nicht, so dass auch Polfilter verwendet werden können. Manuelles Zoomen funktioniert deutlich besser als mit dem Kit-Powerzoom SEL-1650, bei dem der Zoomring deutlich zu leichtgängig ist, und auch ein billiges Plastik-schleift-auf-Plastik-Gefühl hinterlässt. Dies ist hier nicht so -> Pluspunkt. Der Autofokus trifft im Allgemeinen recht fix den Punkt, schweift aber ab und an auch mal etwas hin und her bevor er sich festlegen kann. Schneller wäre in diesem Falle natürlich besser, da ist in dieser Preisklasse aber wohl nicht viel mehr zu erwarten. Dennoch kann man damit gut arbeiten, sofern man weiß, was man erwarten kann. Bildqualität: Bisher sind mir noch keine grob negativen Punkte aufgefallen. Die Verzeichnungen halten sich in Grenzen (und können bei Bedarf mit gängiger Fotosoftware aus RAWs entfernt werden). Fotografiert man in JPEG macht das sowieso die Kamera. CAs sind im Allgemeinen auch kaum zu finden. Einzig die Vignettierung bei Offenblende könnte etwas geringer sein. Etwas abgeblendet ist aber auch das kaum ein Problem mehr. Preis/Leistung und Fazit: Ich habe mich bewusst für dieses Objektiv und gegen die "Alternativen" Sony SEL-18200LE 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 sowie Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC entschieden, da diese zumindest am Teleende lt. verschiedenen Tests deutliche CAs aufweisen. Zudem sind beide auch noch etwas schwerer und vor allem deutlich teurer. In dieser Hinsicht kann das SEL-55210 voll überzeugen. Einen etwas größeren Kritikpunkt gibt es dann aber doch noch: die Lichtstärke. Für meinen Geschmack ist das SEL-55210 eindeutig ein "Tageslichtobjektiv" (sofern man kein Stativ dabei hat oder nicht ständig mit >= ISO1600 fotografieren will). Hier wäre es schön, wenn es in Zukunft noch etwas "schnelleres" im Telebereich für E-Mount geben würde. Alles in allem bin ich jedoch sehr zufrieden mit der gebotenen Leistung für den doch recht günstigen Preis (<300 EUR). Noch als Info: Ich betreibe das Objektiv an einer Sony NEX-6.
