Ignore any reviews pre firmware v3 (or v2), this lens has been transformed. Its not as fast to focus as the Zeiss 55mm but its perfectly suited to day to day shooting and the optics are punching well above its weight price wise. I have found its most responsive in AFC but still good in AFS, ergonomics are excellent (better than the 55), weight is perfect and the focus motor is not as loud as reviews suggest, not noticeable at all really once you get going (unless you have some random OCD!!) The lens has character no doubt about that, images have a great quality especially paired with Sony's fine sensors. If money were no object I would pick the Zeiss 55mm but money is absolutely a factor for me so this is a great surprise to find the lens is nowhere near as bad as I expected. So in summary its got its limitations so don't expect to be blown away but for shooting this lens day to day you can't go wrong IMO, its a little beaut!

I've had this lens for about a week now and have done a fair bit of shooting with it. I bought the lens in order to use it with my A7S ii - largely because I wanted something light and cheap to throw around (if it gets knocked it doesn't really matter). I use my A7 largely for video, but also as an 'every day carry' camera. I'll start by talking a little bit about the image quality. To give you some background on this, I've worked as a photographer for a number of years now and generally shoot with Canon gear. I was in no way expecting this lens to stack up to my multi-thousand pound L lenses, but I'll be honest; I'm really chuffed: Sharpness-wise, the lens isn't perfect - wide open it's not razor sharp. 1.8 does exhibit some haze but it's nothing that you can't easily correct in post with some mid-tone contrast adjustments. Stop down to 2.5 and most of that haze is gone. Beyond 2.8 the lens out resolves my sensor so I have literally no complaints. The edges of the frame do suffer quite a lot of blur on full frame, but it's almost a pleasing effect to be honest. Certainly not bad enough for me to be worried at this cost. The fall-off is nice wide open and when stepped down. Again, at this price you can't expect the world. That said, I'd happily shoot portraits with this and not worry about distracting backgrounds. As for other visual defects, there is some chromatic aberration, but I'd almost consider this a non-issue now, what with post-correction I never consider fringing to be worry-some at all. In terms of function the lens is decent; the first thing you'll notice when you get it out of the box is that it's incredibly light. I've been a Canon shooter for years and used to use Canon's 50 1.8ii which people always said felt very lightweight - this feels much the same to be honest. It's plastic on plastic as far as the eye can see. In my use case that's not necessarily a bad thing, but I dread to think what would happen if you dropped it, or regularly used it in professional environments. The weakest part of the lens is probably the AF. It's just not fast. That's not to say it's horrendously slow or anything. If this was your first experience of AF on a prime lens you'd probably be over the moon. But having come from the world of Canon's L lenses and their absolutely instant lock-on, this feels decidedly slow. It very very rarely misses its mark. But you're often left wondering whether it's quite sure of what it's looking at. There's a bit of momentary hunting backwards and forwards before it hits focus. Obviously we're talking about a fraction of a second here, it's nothing to be upset about in a sub-200 pound lens. That said, I find it a little annoying. I've been a Pro Photographer for 40 years and recently transitioned to Sony from Nikon. I usually buy a cheap 50mm as standard but hesitated with this model after seeing the initial reviews. I purchased a Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art (too bulky/heavy), CZ 55mm 1.8 (Nervous Bokeh) and Samyang 50mm 1.4 (Terrible AF Performance) but wasn't happy with any of them so returned them. This wee lens was on a deal of the day offer recently so I thought I'd take a punt and buy one and try it. It was one of the best decisions I've made as this lens is brilliant value for money for £145.00. The lens came supplied with firmware version 3.0. VERDICT Exceptionally Sharp, and particularly so at centre Clean Bokeh, with exceptionally smooth focus transition and smooth overall rendering Low Chromatic Aberration Light weight and compact size The AF is a tad slow to acquire focus on AFS but is pretty good on AFC The focusing although somewhat noisy, does not hunt or misfocus at all on any of my bodies.

Seriously the best value lens for Sony mirrorless cameras you can buy. Sharp as a tack, great for portrait photography, compact and lightweight. To get a 50mm f1.8 for the price it's sold at is ridiculous especially as it has AF. For still photography you won't find better value anywhere but it's not built for videography. The AF motor us a little noisy and will be noticeable with the inbuilt mic. If you're using a separate mic you'll be grand but it's maybe a little too slow in the autofocus for some. (It's £160 at the time I bought it - stop complaining!)

When you take this lens out the packaging, it is immediately obvious that it is a budget lens. It is very light and the focus ring doesn't have the smoothness of a more expensive lens. Also, the focus motor is VERY loud and it's basically impossible to film with this lens, unless you have a levier mic. Even an off camera shotgun mic will pic up the focus motor noise. Having said that, the lens gets great photos/videos and I am very happy with the purchase. The focus ring might not feel as nice as other lenses, but it does the job perfectly. Only thing to watch out for is that noisy focus motor.

Gefertigt ist das Gehäuse komplett aus Kunststoff mit einem Bajonett aus Metall, insgesamt macht es aber einen wertigen Eindruck. Hinzu kommt, dass es mit 186 g sehr leicht ist. Das einzige Bedienelement ist der gummierte Fokusring. Die Bildschärfe ist insgesamt sehr gut und die Offenblende f1.8 ergibt bei Bedarf ein weiches Bokeh und erlaubt auch in Situationen mit weniger Beleuchtung gute Bilder. Der Autofokus funktioniert in Kombination mit meiner Alpha 6400 sehr gut, in dunkler Umgebung gibt es leichte Abstriche, jedoch haben da teilweise auch teurere Objektive Probleme. Auch ist dieser nicht der schnellste im Vergleich zu anderen, teureren Linsen, ich finde ihn aber auch nicht langsam. Und ja, er macht Geräusche beim Fokusieren, was mich aber nicht stört, da ich vorwiegend Fotos mache. Allerdings passt die Linse weniger an meine Nex 7, der Fokus funktioniert nur im AF-S-Modus, im AF-C-Modus versagt er völlig. Ich empfehle vorher auf der Sony Homepage auf die Kompatibilitätsliste zu schauen, bevor Du einen Kauf in Erwägung ziehst. Da ist das Objektiv z.B. für die gesamte NEX-Reihe nur eingeschränkt nutzbar, die Details, womit es jeweils hakt, sind ausführlich beschrieben. Übrigens gibt es auch bei der Alpha 6000 massive Einschränkungen, was hier ein Käufer bemängelt. Witzigerweise ist auch die Alpha 6400 als eingeschränkt kompatibel beschrieben, erklärt wird das damit, dass die Bildstabilisierung nicht funktioniert. 🤣 Ich habe das Vollformat-Objektiv im Angebot für 149,- € erstanden, das ergibt für mich ein sehr gutes Preis/Leistungsverhältnis. (Wobei der aktuell genannte UVP von 329,- € absoluter Nonsens ist!) Von mir gibt es eine klare Empfehlung.

Sinceramente non sentivo il bisogno di acquistare questa ottica ma visto il prezzo non ho resistito e mi sono buttato sulla mia prima lente a focale fissa. Il Sony SEL-50FA18F è una lente progettata appositamente per le fotocamere full-frame Sony, lunghezza focale fissa di 50mm e un'ampia apertura massima di f/1.8, questa lente offre prestazioni molto buone in condizioni di scarsa luminosità e produce immagini abbastanza nitide, dettagliate e con un bel sfocato. Arriva nel solito packaging arancione senza sigillo però confezionato bene e il classico pluriball per eventuali colpi.. Con l'obbiettivo è compreso anche il suo piccolo paraluce. La costruzione della lente sembra essere buona anche se appena aperta la confezione vi domanderete cosa è questo giocattolino?? Forse dal fatto che è molto leggero, comunque lontano anni luce dalla qualità delle ottiche più costose. Insomma da qualche parte qua e là hanno risparmiato rispetto ai fratelli maggiori 85/35. La messa a fuoco non è velocissima e tante volte non aggancia bene la messa a fuoco soprattutto se si scatta foto ravvicinate. Grazie alla sua versatilità, la SEL-50FA18F è adatta a una vasta gamma di scatti, dalla fotografia di ritratto alla fotografia di paesaggi, io l'ho acquistato per la sua grande apertura che permette di fotografare con poca luce raggiungendo buoni risultati . Per il prezzo pagato è una lente buona, offre prestazioni di buon livello, buona qualità dell'immagine e versatilità. È una scelta ideale per i fotografi che cercano una lente ad un buon prezzo per le loro fotocamere full-frame Sony.

He estado probando el Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 durante varias semanas, sobre todo en interiores (bibliotecas, salas de estudio y espacios con luz controlada), y la verdad es que me ha sorprendido muy positivamente. Lo primero que destaca es su calidad de imagen. A pesar de ser un objetivo bastante asequible dentro del sistema full frame de Sony, ofrece una nitidez muy buena, especialmente en el centro, incluso a aperturas amplias. Para retratos o detalles en interiores, cumple perfectamente. En condiciones de poca luz, como en bibliotecas, se comporta muy bien gracias a su apertura f/1.8. Permite mantener ISOs relativamente bajos y obtener imágenes limpias, con un desenfoque de fondo agradable y natural. El enfoque automático es correcto para fotografía tranquila. No es el más rápido del mercado, pero para uso general, retrato o escenas estáticas funciona sin problema. Eso sí, el motor de enfoque es algo ruidoso, especialmente en entornos silenciosos, aunque no afecta a la calidad final de las fotos. Además, es un objetivo ligero y cómodo, ideal para llevarlo montado sin que pese demasiado, algo que se agradece en sesiones largas. En resumen, es una opción muy recomendable si buscas un 50mm económico, luminoso y con buena calidad óptica. Perfecto para interiores, retrato y fotografía cotidiana con resultados más que satisfactorios. Si quieres un buen objetivo, por un precio razonable, puedes adquirirlo sin miedo.

I have a confession. I am a bonafide pixel peeper. It’s a problem and I know it. Nothing gets me more excited about photography than to snap a picture and immediately review it, zoom it in 100% and see a sharp, clear image. I wouldn’t call it an obsession but the hunt for equipment that can deliver these type of results has cost me a lot of time and money. People always say to spend more $ on the glass and less $ on the body, well I tried that. I recently bought a Sony A6500 and instead of buying several cheap lenses I bought one really good one. The beloved SEL24F18z. Don’t get me wrong, that lens and body combo is really sweet but after trying it out for a few weeks I ended up returning both. The images were nice but zoomed in at 100% they weren’t $2300 nice. So I did some more research and decided to go in the opposite direction. Expensive body, cheap lens. For the same price of the A6500 and the Zeiss 24mm I got an A7rii (Amazon Warehouse used like new) and this “cheap” lens and I’m telling you the difference is night and day. I’ve never seen images this sharp. Every picture I take with this setup looks professional (which I’m definitely not). I was concerned that the high megapixel sensor would show this lens’ weaknesses but quite the contrary. I will say for optimum sharpness to keep it stopped down to at least f2.8. As with most lenses, wide open is pretty soft. Even the Zeiss 24 was soft at 1.8. Quick Tip: Update your camera body AND the lens As soon as I put this lens on and started using it I noticed some very sporadic focus hunting going on. It wouldn’t lock onto anything at all. The short time I had with the Zeiss 24 kind of got me spoiled with ridiculously fast auto focus. So I knew something was wrong. I plugged the camera into my computer and checked for updates. Both the body and lens were one version behind current. As soon as I updated them it was smooth sailing. Well smooth might be an overstatement. This lens is quirky. In good lightning it works perfectly. A little jerky but locks on. But in low light/low contrast it’s another story. It still hunts and is very hit or miss. For the price and image quality I’m willing to overlook poor low light focusing performance. Bottom Line. If you’re like me and scrounged up your last pennies to get the expensive body and are looking for a budget lens that has image quality over focus performance, this is it.
