GILMORE GIRLS S1 (DVD/S)

I recently started watching the Gilmore Girls on E4 at 11:30/12:30 and became enthralled by its quirks and charms! I'd always wondered why it had been so popular in America, but now I can see why. The town of Stars Hollow is the epitomy of a perfect cutesy american town. The kind you might dream of living it. It's cosy TV, like How I met your Mother, Friends and so on. The characters have such nice, but normal, lives. One of the many reasons that its so popular, its a slice of life, but it has sparkle. It has oodles of charm. It oozes charm so much so that my Father can't stand it. My Mother and I have made it a daily ritual to watch it in the mornings over the past 3 weeks. We didnt see the very beginning of series one, but didnt miss too much, we're into series 2 now and have just ordered 1 and 2 on DVD, will probably get series 3 later also. But it's such a shame only the first 3 seasons have gotten released over here, but hopefully Gilmore Girls showing on E4 will have developed more fans, who will, like me, demand that more be ported to Region 2!! I dont like giving away plot in reviews, so I'll just say this. If you like cosy tv, tv to make you smile. Tv that has character, you must watch this. It has the quirks of tv like Greys Anatomy, the weirdness of many different series and so much more to offer you. And since it's so cheap, you would be a fool to miss out on this delightful series. (For those who want to try it out, not only is it shown at 11:30 and 12:30 on E4 and E4+1, it's shown at an earlier time of 8:50 and 9:50 too. So you have no reason to miss it. Record it if not, or, just save time and buy the boxsets now :grin: Then you could have a marathon!!(Which is just what I plan to do!!)

It is said that most American tv is awful but when they do get it right,they strike gold.Well,make no mistake,the Gilmore Girls is good enogth to start a gold rush!Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are simply stunningly good as Lorelei and Rory Gilmore,a 32 year old single mother and her 16 year old daughter living in small town Connecticut.Comedy,drama,pathos and warmth,it's all here in just the right quantities and allied to one of the most articulate and witty scripts i've ever come across.Add a brilliant support cast and this is unmissable entertainment.The quality and consistancy of the acting and script is quite astonishing for a show that last 45 minutes per episode with 21 episodes in this season.This is not the sort of programme that could ever be made in the UK sadly,no downtrodden trash or upper crust stereotypes here,everyone is comfortably off in a material way but this is a story about relationships between family,friends and people in general that applies across the board regardless of status.According to some reports (but not all),Lauren Graham is a bit of a prickly customer in real life,but,whatever the truth is,chances are you'll fall in love with her in the Gilmore Girls.The only huge downside to her character is that she's not a cat person! I bought this for less than nine pounds from Amazon,what fabulous value and quality!

After all this time I'm amazed that its actually coming out on Region 2, as well as being amazed, I am also very pleased. Gilmore Girls is a rare form of tv show, its fresh, fast-paced, witty and set in a town full of such unbelivably diverse characters. In any other show you wouldn't believe the eclectic mix of people could exist in such a small town but they are so well written that you can't not believe they truly do all live in the quaint town of Stars Hollow. The two leading ladies of the show fit their characters perfectly, but Lauren Graham who plays the young mother Loreali Gilmore steals the show. She portrays Loreali with such energy and enthusiasm that makes her instantly loveable, and surrounded by a cast of stellar actors and actresses she excels herself every episode.

I stumbled across the program by pure accident while on a work training course about 2 years. I watched it every night in my hotel room that week and then completely forgot about it cos I don't have the Hallmark channel. I quite enjoyed it, so on a whim I decided to order season one. The best move I have ever made. This series is so sweet, quirky, full of wonderful characters, pop culture references and lots of laugh out loud moments and plenty of crying into your hanky moments as well. I guarantee that you will find yourself with a smile on your face at every single episode. This is the perfect TV series to watch on the sofa, under a blanket with a tub of ice cream.

Great TV programme about mother and daughter. The only downfall i found with this product is the way it is packaged, it's not like a boxset it's like a DVD box with several discs within it.

A really good series packed full of interesting characters and good story lines which are very well acted in the main . You care about what happens but it is undemanding entertainment - excellent for switching off - very relaxing and has a lot of humour which is nice and uplifting .

Witty? There is wit, and there is nonsense. There's absolutely nothing funny about their 'wit' 9 out of 10 times. It's just analogies where none is required. Terrible show. Clara is spot on in her review. Example: (mother and daughter are walking to a cafe, when for no rhyme or reason....) mother: you are tilting daughter: i am not tilting mother: maybe i should put a pen on your head to see if it rolls over. That is just an example of the rubbish that this series is resplendent with. This nonsense show is quite the milestone in american 'comedies' as things went downhill to the level of pure asininity with lots of other comedies and sit-coms as well. I suppose when there isn't wit, the americans, from the 90s onward, tended to rely on laughing machines, and just nonsense-talk, which is now increasingly taken and promoted as comedy. Americans are really setting the standard for gross retardation. Well, one cannot expect more from a people whom are ignorant about everything other than themselves. I could never imagine such nonsense-talk until i was rendered quite speechless in the face of the rubbish being spouted out every other minute in this series. Another downside of the show is that the main characters - mother and daughter - aren't likeable. The mother, for being a blathering idiot who just can't shut up long enough to answer questions, and the daughter for being a philandering know-it-all whose puts on an angelic face whenever she does anything wrong and which is hence portrayed as alright. One would have to wonder how one who aspires to Harvard and who gets great grades and who is supposed to be intelligent can pretend to not know this. But the producers manage to slip in some nice 'la la la' music whenever this happens to make it 'lighthearted' and nice even though it obviously isn't. If one looks carefully enough - though it is all too obvious to me - one will find many instances of really bad behaviour which is not censured in anyway in this series most times. But i suspect this show might be popular in the UK given the emotional rigor mortis that many suffer from in their pretentious effort to be like the Windors. Hence, this show might provide cathartic relief from minding one's Ps and Qs and all the alphbet betwixt and besides as such a people try to live a passionate life vicariously through the Gilmore Idiots. *cue laughing machine please* or *lalala lala" I am from the generation who grew up to MASH, Cheers, amongst others, and can't help being shocked at how a people whom were pretty good at wit and storylines could have sunken to depths of stupidity previously unheard of in human history.

These two ladies made an old man fall in love again! I highly recommend it to those who like myself suffer from a large streak of Romanticism! :-)

die Geschichte mit Mutter und Tochter ist schon sehr seicht. Dann kommen noch die elitären Großeltern hinzu, die sich dann in das "abgenabelte" Leben der Mutter wieder hineinmischen. Habe mir leider die Serie 2 auch gleich mit gekauft.
