The bottom of the container has a valve that stops the coffee coming out. It sits flush on a counter without leaking out the bottom. The stand has a lever that can be pressed. When the container sits on the stand, pressing the lever pushes on the valve, releasing the coffee into the glass container that you put under it. When the lever hasn't been pressed it doesn't touch the valve. Hope this helps **Q: Hi all. Does this prevent all sediment (course grind) and is it drinkable as made or do you add cold water to it to dilute?** A: I bought this for my husband, who loves his coffee. It does seem to prevent all sediment, but he makes the coffee strong and then adds boiling water to it to dilute it and make it hot. or ice if he wants an iced coffee. I believe you can choose how strong to make it. **Q: What coffee would you recommend buying for this?** A: The primary advantage of cold-brew is that cold water doesn't leach out the bitter components of the coffee, so you get a much smoother taste. I've offered it to numerous guests without telling them that I'm doing anything different and, almost without exception, they've talked about it being smooth. So, if you're a skinflint like me, you can get away with relatively low cost blends and they taste really good. I use Tesco's own blend ground coffee most of the time and, to me anyway, it tastes fine.
