Yes you can use paper filters, however the nylon one you get with it pretty much just taps out and is ready to use again. The only niggle I have is that the bracket for it is too slim. I was going to attach it to the side panel in my van, however if I did, you wouldn't be able to open the filter compartment as it's too tight against the side.
