Review: Very versatile mobile vise - This vise is very nice for the price, it's very smell but very sturdy with a solid design. First glance: I noticed the ball joint, threaded rod, and guide pins were quite dry with a very light machine oil applied so I disassembled the unit degreased it then liberally coated the metal on metal contact points, the ball joint, the threaded rods, and the guide pins with moly grease: 1. Unscrewing the threaded rod all the way releases the front jaw half. 2. Using a size 2 slotted screwdriver you can gently pry the circlip from the threaded rod shaft which releases the threaded rod from the jaw assembly. 3. Unscrewing the smaller spring/washer retained bolt and the two larger phillips screws frees the ball joint clamp assembly. There is no bushing or bearing to take the load of the guide pins so i filled the jaw half cavities with moly grease and after assembling the unit i wiped off all the excess that built up and degreased the jaw halfs so now the unit is built more accordingly to last a lot longer. I'm looking into designing some bushings and guide pin bearings to print with my 3d printer to see if i can make the jaws stay aligned and not wobble. Overall its a great vise and i've needed a vise for decades but dont have a proper solid table that would be suited for bolting a big solid vise, this is a hobby vise that is mobile and is perfect for my airsoft gunsmithing. 5/5 would recommend to anyone, I'd also suggest mirroring my actions to degrease clean and grease the unit with a proper grease designed for metal on metal contact that will reduce wear ultimately prolonging the longevity of the vice, I know it's only £22 but a bit of rust or uneven wear or galling would ruin things quickly.
Review: Recommended hard wearing, solid... - Great piece of kit, a lot harder wearing than some other hobby craft vices, not made from plastic! Good grip, versatile angles, will hold small pieces as well as larger ones and locks tight to the bench. Takes a lot of abuse without failing.... Got this one after seeing the Dremel version a friend uses, he bought one right after my recommendation and threw the Dremel away!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is it gentle enough to hold Styrofoam without squishing it?**
A: Yeah , if you don’t overtighten it . It has rubber covers on the jaws

**Q: Is there a way to permanently add this to a bench without it being on the edge?**
A: Not without modifications.

**Q: What kind of a product desciption is this? It tells us nothing of the product. How wide are jaws & how wide will they open? What is max thinkness of b**
A: The jaws are 4" long and open about the same, 4". Remember this is a light duty vice. The jaws also have a groove vertical and horizontal to hold round objects. The vice also comes with rubber pads to put over the jaws. I love this vice and does everything I want it to. Hope this helps.

**Q: Is this sturdy enough to hold a spoon blank for spoon carving? Want to clamp the spoon blank in and use a spokeshave.**
A: I would say yes . I have held pieces very securely.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Vice dilemma!
*by I***N on 28 February 2013*

This is not an easy one! The good stuff includes the design & the price, but there are some issues that really should not be there! The design really is excellent and it such a shame that the dismal quality control doesn't live up to it. As delivered, my example works OK (and in fairness for much hobby use and at this price point that's fine) but with a little more care in manufacture it could be so much better! Issues: - the jaws do not close properly or evenly. If I close them on a sheet of 90gm A5 paper, one side locks up hard under medium tommy bar pressure but the other side is free to slide freely between the jaws. Also the jaws are misaligned - the top and end surfaces do not sit level with their mating jaw. Both of these faults are due to the fact that one jaw has one of its fixing holes drilled & tapped off centre. In addition, the casting on which the jaw seats has not been cleaned up properly - it is gunged up with paint and there are casting marks that stand proud of the surface that prevent the jaw seating correctly. - the cover that sits over the ball joint is a very poor fit - it looks like the ball itself is either too big for the cavity in which it sits, or the cavity casting has not been cleaned and dressed correctly. I haven't had time to look into this yet, but it probably isn't irreparable or mission critical. I suppose the best way to look at this tool is as a kit of parts from which it is possible to make a very decent and versatile vice (that's why I've given it 4 stars). It is a relatively simple matter to clean up the top casting and make up a new set of jaws that will close properly. I'll probably make up an aluminium set and/or a nylon set whilst I'm at it. For less than £20 it's not a bad set of parts, on the other hand, I didn't know I was buying a kit.... Bottom line, Stanley: spend the time and effort that you wasted on silly packaging on a bit of QC and you'd have a much better product for no additional cost!
