## Description

Product Description Kreg tools have revolutionised the way thousands of woodworkers join wood today. The Kreg story began in 1986 when Craig Sommerfeld wanted to find an effective way of attaching dowelled face frames to a cabinet without using nails and putty. As a result, Craig designed and invented ‘Craig’s Jig’, which allowed him to attach the face frames from the inside of the cabinet where the joint would be hidden from view.Encouraged by friends and co-workers, Craig built more jigs and demonstrated them at a woodworking show. He found an audience with no knowledge of the joining method he was promoting, but who were extremely interested in learning about a new way to build woodworking projects. Craig carried on building during the week and showing his products at weekends, then went on to expand the Kreg range to include tools for cutting, clamping, routing and measuring.Designed to simplify every woodworking project, build confidence and deliver lasting, professional results, Kreg is now an industry leader in pocket-hole technology, and an established and trusted brand throughout the US, UK and Europe. Review: Kreg Excellent Master System 4 All - Ummed and Ahhed over this for quite a while. First off there's the joints versus joining thing to get around. So I reconciled that with the realisation that when working with MDF chipboard and PSE softwoods I'm probably not the fine cabinetmaker using secret half mitred dovetails I think I am. Then there was this K4MS kit versus the newer K5. Which to get? The K5 has the built in storage for drill bits and support for wider boards and is Newer. But the K5 kit also has the clamp lever on the jig pointing directly groinwards and what looks like a not so intuitive method for gauging collar setting / bit depth. So, finally, I got this K4MS instead which is great. It's marked up as metric and pre configured with locking registers on the jig for setting the thickness of your material which then determines the depth for the drill. You set the depth of the stop on the drill bit by sitting the bit in a groove on a jig, approximating the end of the cutting portion of the bit against depth marks. These two settings then allow you to drill a clearance and a pilot hole in your material in one operation that will give you a very strong compression joint with the correct length of screw. Don't let me put you off, describing using the Kreg is much more complex than actually using it. Helpfully, Kreg include a DVD of videos on how to do common builds with the device. Which shows how easy it is. One difference in translation between the US / UK market is that the closest approximation for 18 mm material common here would be the 19 mm mark on the jig. I slightly under drill to compensate, especially in man made boards which are less tolerant of the Kreg screws, which really achieve a lot of compression in the joint. You get a sample selection of screws with the kit so you can see exactly how strong joints made with the pocket hole system are. Impressive, even without glue. Especially in substantial material. Tried it on some oak boards. Really solid. Kreg recommend different threads for different materials; fine thread for hard woods, coarse threads for chipboard and soft woods. You also get a face clamp with this kit, which has a double use as both clamp to hold the jig to your bench when drilling the pilot and clearance holes as well as holding material as it is joined. The lag screw method adopted by Kreg works best when both pieces to be joined are held closely together when the screw[s] are inserted. The clamp works well for shallow frames. There's also a portable single hole jig for running repairs on drawers and such, plus a full size portable block for taking the full jig to the workpiece and working in situ. You also get a spacer / support stop along with an extraction vacuum connection to keep the jig clear of dust as you use it if connected to a shop vac. You get one drill bit and adjustable collar with an allen key. Two square head driver bits one long one short, and along with the sample screws a few wooden hole plugs in case the holes are visible. The system is so well designed and thought through that you may find yourself adding other Kreg components. The jig is well made of good stuff. Slight worry about the quality of the driver bits, the square head needs to hold up over time. Overall I'm happy with the Kreg K4MS.
Review: Don't waste money on other pocket hole jigs! - This is so easy and quick to use that it makes drilling a joy. Making cabinets or boxes is now so simple. The port for dust collection is a great idea as is the on board storage. On the underside of the jig you can store the drill bit with collar attached and also one of the screwdriver bits. At the front of the jig there is a small hole for storing the Allen key. If you are anything like me you'll know how much of a time-saver this can be. No more hunting for bits. There are a variety of pocket hole jigs out there and previously I laughed at people paying so much when surely the others done the same thing. I eat my words. I had a mid range one I paid about £40 for but the pair of holes where never quite the same and I spent so much time attaching the device to the wood then removing it and getting the next bit of wood. The Kreg is so superior. Also because you drill vertically as opposed to horizontally like a lot of others it is so much easier. The fact that the jig is secured and you move the timber only is a massive time-saver. It also seems way more accurate than others I've used but perhaps that's just me. I would highly recommend this product.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can the Kreg system produce good results with MDF/chipboard.**
A: Hi Trevor,Yes it does, with a couple of considerations. One already mentioned is use of the correct screw thread: Coarse for MDF and chipboard. Also I'd also downsize the length slightly and go easy on the screw driving. This is because the system works on the lag screw principle which uses compression to effect a solid join and as MDF & chipboard are compressible it's easy to over drive the screw through the material. The jig is also marked for metric equivalents of imperial measures: 19mm = 3/4 inch for example, whereas MDF comes in 18mm. So I slightly under drill the pilot hole. Sorry to go on, but I also found the right angle clamps a little too vicious for holding corners in conti board, with breakout on releasing them. It wouldn't put me off though, just take it into consideration. Also, as another reviewer said, glue reinforces the joint if disassembly isn't required. Good luck with your project!

**Q: Some people seem to have received MM and some people imperial, are Amazon randomly sending out different versions?**
A: Hi, yes the jig is in MM and the drill insert is in Inches. But it is a great piece of equipment, i made my daughter's wardrobe with them.

**Q: I hav read the questions / answers below and some say the kit is marked in inches, some say it marked in MM. Which is correct ?**
A: I bought mine from Amazon UK earlier this month (Oct 2014) and it is marked in mm. Not used it yet, but looks to be very well made and sturdy. No option to choose inches or mm when I ordered and it was supplied by Anazon themselves, not an affiliated marketplace store

**Q: Can a left handed person use the jig ??? and work as efficently as a right handed person**
A: I am right handed but I don't see any problem with a left handed person using the jig

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ So easy to use..
*by T***1 on 2 February 2018*

The more I use this the more I like it. It is simply so easy to use and produces decent fixings. Setting the drill depth stop is much better than on some rival versions and the "washer head" screws clamp the work really well, unlike the countersunk head versions. Dust extraction works better than on any other tool I own. I am not a huge fan of square drive, I prefer Torx (also called star) but def better than Pozidrive or the truly awful Philips version. You can buy Torx screws that fit the holes this drills so happy days! It is fairly expensive, but I decided to treat myself and, as it is getting MUCH more use than I expected, i do not have any regrets
