Went around the up stairs of my house and recorded all the roof temperatures where the wall meets the roof. I set the b&d at 5 degree temperatures difference and as I went around all the rooms it changed color from green ( room temp ) to blue ( loss of room temp by 5 degree ). I recorded all the temperatures and decided to go to roof space and check what was going on.After inspection I seen that the cavity was not closed at the wall plate and the fibre glass insulation wasent covering all the roof in places. So, spent the full day filling cavity with 6 inch fibre glass and making sure that the roof of the bed rooms were all insulated. A real pain in the ass job BUT well worth it the bedrooms are 4-6 degrees warmer and even down stairs is warmer. All for the price of buying 4 rolls of insulation costing 50 Euros. Every house should have one of these and IV just descovered that my front and back door is reading a temperature 13 degrees while the hall and utility where doors are is 22 degree's. After having used it a few times it was aparent that depending on how far away you are from the surface the sensor could be above or below the coloured dot. Also the unit only tells you the measured surface temperature in relation to the initial reference temp, which in itself is only in relation to ambient temperature, i.e so you can't point at a surface and find out it's actual temperature, so if your sensor was in a room with an ambient temp of 20c and you measured a wall which is 18c the unit will show a refernce temp of -2c. Can it do that?** A: I don't belive it can to any real degree of accuracy. What it can do is measure the temperature of the glass and also the room temperature and so allow you to calculate the difference, but you would also need to know the readings of a double glazed unit under the same internal and external temperature conditions. Humidity would probably also play a part. At best I wpuld say it could give an indication, but the state of the window seals and if single or double glazed would tell you that anyway. The machine is best used to check for cold spots, thermal leaks, etc. **Q: Would it be able to detect body heat from rodents behind a plasterboard wall** A: Sorry to hear of your problem. The thermal leak detector works by directing the user towards the loss of heat, rather then finding heat sources. If you have a rodent problem, they are getting into the property from the outside. Maybe a close scrutiny of all possible access points would be helpful. Rats and mice can squeeze into a very small hole, so pipework, cablework, a hole around a window covered by greenery would be my first areas to search. Indeed it is wrongly labelled. It is basically an extremely accurate thermometer that tests the temperature of surfaces, including glass!! It identified exactly a cold area on my wood floor that I did not realise I had. Now covered with a large rug, the room is now cosy. The old patio doors were much colder than I realised and replacement is expedited. You can survey your entire house and ID hot and warm spots. For best result do it when the outside temperature is very low; with and without wind. I look forward to using it is out garden and house thermometer at all times of the year This may be the best value and quality product I have ever bought.
