We used them to enclose a play area in the backyard and then filled the interior with playground wood chips. The 3 year old in our household loves the play area and the wood chips stay corralled and off the lawn. The spikes that are included keep the timbers fastened together snugly and the whole thing looks attractive. We covered the area with landscape cloth prior to filling it with wood chips and the timbers and spikes hold the cloth well. This should keep grass and weeds from growing up in the play area for the most part. I am thinking these same timbers could be used to enclose raised garden beds also.
