You can use ice cubes or the iced insert that comes with the collar. My Rufus Dog prefers cubes, and I don't mind melted ice in the house or car. When the ice melts, it goes down the chest of the dog. I read on the Kool Collar website that this is the chest is danger zone of over-heated dogs and how they get heat stroke. Apparently, the developers of Kool Collar lost his dog to heat stroke, so he/they developed this collar to save our loved ones. My Rufus loves lying in front of the fan at home or AC in the car with his wet chest and, outside, he is quite comfortable in the heat while wearing his collar. We have a 110 lb Bernese Mountain Dog with tons of fur. He is hot every minute! He loves walks, but 30 mins & he spends 3 hours getting cool. He likes the Kool Collar so much, he is trying to stick his head into it before I can get the ice in it! It works good, and is completely melted in about a 40 min walk. I left off a star because the ice pack sent with it does not fill up the entire collar, it has to be supplemented with ice cubes.
