    This book surpassed my expectations.

*by S***R on Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2015*

I wanted a children's atlas that was not too much in depth, had great illustrations, and thus would not loose the interest of a 4-7 year old. This book surpassed my expectations and in fact may be useful even with older kids.Pros: The start of the book teaches all sorts of info in small easy to understand chunks... PLUS each section has pictures to find in the maps the correlate to that topic. What an ingenious way to get kids to know the REAL difference in placement around the world. The maps were filled with little icons that significantly added to the knowledge being introduced. A big plus for me was that (Unlike the lift-the-flap atlas also by Usborne) this atlas had Ecuador on the map! My 2005 edition also had no reference to controversial things like global warming etc. Honestly, I found no agenda here at all - it just teaches the world, what lives there, and cultural diversity. I also really liked that the end of the book had review questions.Cons: It was difficult to read some information as in was in the crack of the two-page spread. It is SMALL at only 5.5 x 7 inches. If it had been slightly bigger, the information would have been easier to read and/or more information could have been included.

    Great Introduction to Geography!

*by P***A on Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2011*

My son (4.5 yrs.) love this book! He carried it around with him for three days after receiving it. Even now he refers back to it often. As we read about or watch films set in other countries, he enjoys finding them in his Atlas and checking out the various wildlife indigenous to that region. He is a big nature lover. He also loves that a great deal of ocean life is featured. Finding the blue ringed octopus off of the coast of Australia was cause for great excitement! The information in presented in a fun way, easy to follow, and not overwhelming.I am really puzzled by some of the comments left by other reviewers. It seems that some adults were disappointed because the Atlas wasn't detailed enough to plan trips with, and someone even accused the book of having some type of hidden agenda. If you want to introduce your little one (Pre-K through the primary grades) to the idea of geography, travel, reading maps, or delving a little into other cultures, this is a perfect place to start. An added bonus if you have a nature or animal lover in mind! It also makes a great springboard into additional subjects. If you are looking for an older child, or hoping to use this to plan your next trip, look elsewhere.

    Perfect First Atlas

*by C***R on Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2013*

This atlas is just about perfect for younger children beginning to explore geography. It starts with an introduction to the features of our world -- oceans, grasslands, deserts, mountains, etc. and includes some info on how people adapt in different climates. Then there are wonderful full-spread presentations of the continents, with gentle illustrations showing some major highlights of various regions. There is also, of course, a full world map. The colors and pictures are engaging without being overwhelming or "too busy," as I find in so many other children's books. The size of the book is also large enough for the images to be clear. The text is digestible for smaller children yet still manages to pack a lot of useful information in. I can't imagine a better book for introducing geography to a 3-7 year old. The detailed country-by-county descriptions can come later or through another book. I, for one, am grateful that this book is not too long or cluttered, because it doesn't overwhelm my 4-year-old, who loves to go through it with me. Long story short: highly recommended!
