I actually lowered the flame quite a bit, and set the timer, to see how long a tank of oil will last. When it finally got dark (yes, I was messing around with it all day, walking into dark closets to analyze the light... but not for long due to the smoke), I momentarily turned the flame up to see how much light I would get. Suddenly, I noticed that there was no longer any smoke! So the issue with smoke was a combination of having the flame too low, and not having the lamp heated up. Knowing how to use your lamp/lantern is essential for avoiding smoke. But once you learn, breathe free and clear! This oil is great! I don't know exactly what's in it because it doesn't say but it really stinks. Not quite as bad as kerosene but I would definitely go with the Lamp Light ultra-pure oil in the future. But for value it's a good deal.
