I read the instructions on the box and tried it out on one of our regular kitchen knives. The sharpening was easy. The bamboo base has rubber on the bottom so it makes the whole unit nonskid. The stone did not move at all while I was sharpening which makes it much easier to maintain the correct angle on the knife. I am very happy with this sharpening stone and now we have sharp knives to cut things up with in the kitchen.
