Is there a place behind the unit to store the wiring if needed?

yes there is space to store a part of the wiring. but not enough to store the whole length. You can fix the device into the mount and then turn it around a couple of full circles to conceal about 2 circumference length of wiring.

What is the outer dimension of the base? How wide? Trying to figure out if it will cover/hide my recessed outlet box.

How to get them apart? They came assembled and impossible to twist them loose. Ideas?

The pieces are supposed to part with a twist. Hold the base (bottom 1/4 inch) turn the rest to the left.

Exactly what I was looking for, I wanted to ceiling mount so I drilled a hole in the back plate to feed the wires and keep the completely hidden. It looks awesome. 1 criticism would be the drywall anchors they provide kinda suck, use your own.
