The sets do work well together - I got this for my 5 year old son for Christmas, along with a couple of other sets of the Learning Resources Engineering sets. The kid loves to build things and he is extremely creative. He doesn't really build the items on the sets, but that's okay. The things he creates are pretty amazing. While the 5 year old is at school, my 2 1/2 year old also tries to build with the sets. He can't do much else than stick the legs into the bases, but he has fun with it. I also like to build with this set. I don't know why, but it's fun. So, it's fun all around!! Buy just one set, or several, but it's good STEM for young kiddos.

He doesn't really build the items on the sets, but that's okay. The things he creates are pretty amazing. The sets do work well together, as well as separately, which is pretty cool. My daughter got this for her sixth birthday and is able to construct the designs on all the cards without assistance. She will also play with it for hours at a time creating her own designs using elements from the five idea cards. There is a lot more play-ability to this set before it gets old hat like some of Learning Resources' other stem sets.
