Most likely not at all. The work in detecting changes in "Infra-red" heat energy. They do however communicate to the hub over distance as they are not using wifi but 868Mhz radio communications. I have the sensors fitted inside shipping containers and the radio transmission has no problem passing through the metal skin of the container. The sensor is there to detect the door opening. You could fit outside in your garden but they are not waterproof so will need protection against the elements and not be in direct sunlight. Ideal for alcoves. **Q: Do these have a feature so if it doesn't see motion it can trigger lights to turn off?** A: You can create a routine in the Alexa app, where if the Motion Sensor detects no motion for a certain length of time, it turns a device on/off (plug, bulb etc). I have mine set to turn my heater off if it detects no motion for 1 hour.
