I just finished cleaning two serving trays that had their finish damaged because I am lazy and have put them in the dishwasher for 30 years. I hated the gritty grey tarnish that had built up. This website https://www.leaf.tv/articles/care-of-armetale-trays/ recommends Wilton Armetale polish (which gets poor Amazon reviews) or Nevr-Dull polish. It takes a long time, but Nevr-Dull brought both trays back to an attractive, smooth luster. I recommend: 1. Using gloves, start with a half/half paste of vinegar and baking soda and rub hard with a textured rag to break down the tarnish. 2. Switch to Nevr-Dull, using medium-size shreds pulled apart very thinly to clean in sections, alternating with a clean paper towels to remove black residue. 3. If your shreds are black on the outside and have clean fiber inside, pull apart more and continue to use, changing to new when completely black. You will probably use too-large pieces at first; you actually need surprisingly small pieces. 4. As the Armetale item becomes cleaner, use progressively smaller pieces and quickly polish off the grime with clean paper towels. 5. Even when it starts to look quite good, it will continue to improve with additional applications of Nevr-Dull. Stop when you like the results, wash in warm soapy water and dry immediately.
