Manual augers don't work well, and they require a lot of strength and time. I considered bringing a portable drill and a sand auger bit to the beach with me recently - I know that works! But it seemed like I was over-engineering the solution. Looking for an alternative, I found the Sand Gopher here on Amazon and thought it was worth a try - certainly the price was right. And...it worked brilliantly! I confess to being surprised. I think that claiming 30 seconds to excavate a 15" hole in the sand is perhaps over-optimistic. But it never took me over a minute, and it was really easy to do, too. Once you're down that far, your umbrella stays put, especially if it has an auger on the end of it. Fellow beach-goers were in awe, and several whipped out their smartphones and ordered their own. The flat metal teeth on the end eroded away after just a few uses, but it really didn't seem to impact the effectiveness of the thing. Perhaps slightly more robust construction would help.
