There are no legs and without drilling holes into the box springs there is no way to attach it to a headboard. **Q: Can the legs be left off and used as a traditional box spring?** A: There are no legs included with this unit. This is just a box spring intended for a 12-14' mattress. The legs in the photos are not part of the package. **Q: How many inches apart are the metal slates?** A: They are approximately six inches apart. I say "approximately" because our's is assembled and the frame cover is on (as well as a mattress). So, I reached in and measured with my hand. I remember thinking, when I was assembling it, that there were a lot of slats. Just remember to use something like a rubber mallet when you assemble it. Some reviewers said they couldn't quite fit certain parts and that is because this frame is precise and snug (and therefore it needed a bit of "persuasion" in spots). Once assembled it is very sturdy and we have not had any issues with it. Be advised that if it is placed on a metal bed frame, it will slide (if you are sitting up and leaning against your headboard, for example). We have a hope chest at the foot of our bed and we found that moving it against the frame/mattress was all that was required to prevent this. Of course, I am sure that there are other ways to secure it as well.
