## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can this router handle gigabyte internet service?**
A: No. NO. Nooooooooooo!
I will try to submit a picture with speed trials but in short- it is a complete lie and false advertising to state openly or even imply that this can handle 1 Gig speeds.
Directly connected with a 6ft Ethernet cable I cap out at around 576 Mbps (roughly half of a Gig service) but when I swap to Wifi it drops by an order of magnitude to ~ 50 Mbps or 1/20th of a Gig service.
Xfinity technicians came out 3 separate times and verified that we are getting 1 Gig speeds but I was told that you need DOCSIS 3.1 to handle 1 Gig service.

Really regretting paying so much for this junk. It looks sharp, I will say that but for two people trying to teach via Zoom this device can't handle it. Loses connection and/or poor service DAILY!

**Q: can i track individual device' data usage? i bought it for this reason but i dont see that option in the app or webpage**
A: You can, you have to log into the 192.168.1.1 and sign in. It is under WiFi usage.

**Q: What's the average range for the 5GHz broadcast for an average household. Having the 4 huge external antennas seems like it's a benefit over other...**
A: Range is good on 5 but the closer the device the better were as the 2.4 has a much larger range and is still as good i find myself using the 2.4ghz more often just depends on your needs for witch is best

**Q: Can I use this one as modem only?**
A: I guess, if you absolutely have to. You'd plug your stand-alone router into one of this unit's downstream LAN ports. I wouldn't recommend it though. There are better modem-only units out there. Also, this is a DOCSIS 3.0 unit, limited to about 600 Mb/s download speeds. I strongly recommend a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. That'll support 1 Gb/s (if your cable ISP offers it). I'll be replacing my own unit for that very reason.

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Straightforward to install, great performance
*by L***L on March 4, 2021*

This combo replaced 2 separate pieces of equipment: a Zoom cable modem and a Asus RT-N66U router. The Zoom modem had suddenly become "not supported" by Xfinity (I've been using it for 9 years), and the RT-N66U was having intermittent radio problems. The CM-32 was fairly easy to setup, using the quick start setup leaflet provided. It involved connecting the Xfinity cable, and connecting to the router via a default WiFi SSID. I used a Samsung tablet to do this. I was prompted to install a Xfinity app on my Android smartphone, and from then on the setup was done via the phone app. Pretty quick and painless, about 15 minutes from start to finish, no need to call any technicians. Very nice.I have since upgraded my Xfinity plan to 400 Mb/s down - 10 Mb/s up. Those are the MINIMUM speeds I get with the new combo! I'm typically getting around 480/12 via wired ethernet. Pretty impressive. So far working without a hitch, and one less piece of equipment to manage.WiFi speeds are also pretty impressive, particularly in the 5 GHz band. We have a 3200 sq ft home, and coverage from the router is very impressive throughout the house. In my neighborhood, there's zero interference from neighbors on the 5 GHz band, which is why I'm using it. On my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 tablet, I'm getting about 160 Mb/s down, at the furthest reach from the router. More than fast enough, and probably taxing the puny processor in the tablet! My ThinkPad laptop gets around 320 Mb/s down at the same location. The router's browser-based management interface is typically Asus, well thought-out and similar enough to my old router's that it was very easy to navigate. One caveat though: Asus appears to have removed any ability for the end user to update the router's firmware. Researching the internet suggest that they've taken the view that they will "push" firmware updates to the router if an when they become available. We'll wait and see if that ever happens. The router shows it's currently running firmware version 1.0.1.5.Overall, a very nice combo, working extremely well for now. Recommended.*** Edited 3/16/2021 ***I noticed today that the unit is now running firmware version 1.0.1.7. So, clearly Asus pushed an update to it. However, no indication of when the update took place, nor what the update has in it. All I can say is that it's performing as well as it did before - AFAIK. Asus really should be more transparent about their update policy.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ... ASUS CM-32 to replace the Xfinity Gateway due to poor wifi performance to my Ring Floodlight Cam and Ring ...
*by S***N on March 6, 2018*

I purchased the ASUS CM-32 to replace the Xfinity Gateway due to poor wifi performance to my Ring Floodlight Cam and Ring Doorbell. This completely solved my wifi issue. I'm a PC gamer and this device is a lot faster than what Xfinity provided. Cabled and wifi speeds are much faster and the range is excellent. The only issue I have is that the new wireless Xi5 cable boxes from Xfinity will not work with this or any other 3rd party modem. They will only work with the provided Xfinity gateway they install. I spent quite a bit of time last night with Xfinity support because my wireless cable box wouldn't work and that's when they informed me it never will unless I use their gateway! Now I have to have a tech come in to install a cabled box. Small price to pay for better performance and a much better wifi signal.

### ⭐ Frequently disconnects from the Internet - not reliable if you need 24/7 connectivity (UPDATED)
*by A***X on September 13, 2018*

I have been using this product for 6 months and today I ordered a different product to replace it. My biggest issue is it disconnects from the internet every one or two weeks, which requires that I do a reboot to get it working again. I thought I could live with this, but not. I have too many "smart" devices that I rely on that need 24/7 connectivity. If the router disconnects when you are not at home, your devices are inaccessible. I did tolerate this a few times, I would reboot the router at the end of the day when I arrived back home, but the latest disconnect happened when I was away on a business trip. I asked my wife to reboot the modem, which she did, but the wifi is not coming up. Fast forwards 4 days, and my family is still without internet and wifi waiting for me to come back. I will be discarding this router and buying a different brand with a different chipset. It seems these disconnects are related to the Intel Puma 6 vulnerability, and Comcast has not yet pushed a firmware update to fix it (yes firmware is managed by your ISP).I do not recommend it.UPDATE: After I arrived home I tried to understand what the problem had been with the router. I connected to the web interface and showed that Wifi was working, but the lights on the router showed it was not. I had to do a factory reset to get Wifi working again. After that, I installed a new Netgear modem I bought. This time I decided to buy the modem and router separately, so that if one technology improves faster than the other one, I don't have to replace both. The first thing I noticed after I had everything setup was that latency when launching certain apps on my phone had improved significantly, in particular when streaming programs on ESPN to my phone, and when starting the Nintendo Switch Parental Control app. I used to have to disable Wifi on my phone and run on LTE to get the Nintendo Switch app to work.. Now it works on Wifi just fine. Overall, the ASUS is not a good modem-router if you need 24/7 internet. I have between 10 to 15 devices connected at a time, and for these I needed a dependable modem that the ASUS turned out not to be.
