It's a different story now because despite his struggles John Cleaver feels more like a hero than ever and it is interesting to see the emotional havoc he has to deal with.Of course this is not a happy story but it is a good deep one with plenty of character development and great side characters to see John have to interact with as himself. The setting could be any place small town America and we dont really get picture of it. The plot though kept me in gauged and a really felt for the characters.It is to say anything about the story without spoiling the fun, but if you enjoyed the first trilogy and want to see where it took John and Brook afterward this is a great read. However you don't need to have read the first trilogy to enjoy this. The added cast was a nice touch and Dan Wells brought them in as if they were always a part of the series. I think the stakes in this one were so much higher then previous books. Especially with how everything came to an end. I don't even know how to really review this for you guys since this is the fourth book but man oh man was that a mind boggling ending. John Cleaver has become one of my new favorite characters because of the fact that he is struggling with APD and Dan Wells does such a great job at handling the mental illness aspect of his books. We even get to see the effects of Dissociative Identity Disorder which is also handled and dealt with very well. I am trying to take my time with this series but each book is like adrenaline for me and I just want more. Really saddened by the fact that there are only 2 more books to read! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Start of another trilogy *by M***A on Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2015* This series continues to amaze me. With every release I am afraid that the author Dan Wells will find the need to make John more likable. Don't get me wrong, I like John. I like him because of how twisted he can be. The anger and rage boiling in his character always makes for an entertaining book.This one does feel quite different then the other three. I thought the first three were mystery horror novels. This one felt more Fantasy then anything. Still a heavy dose of mystery and horror drive the plot. There is a good deal more world building about the demons that inhabit Johns story. They make this book feel more Epic than the previous entries.If I had to nitpick I would say that to many of the supporting cast are a tad bit cliched and one dimensional. There is enough with them to get a good feel but that was the weakest portion of this story to me.Still it is John that I read this for and he doesn't disappoint! Spending time in his head can be frightening, but it is never dull. Throw in a great plot that kept me guessing all the way to the end and you have another great John Cleaver book.
