Full of philosophical puzzles and supernatural surprises, this collection of stories from the influential Argentinian author contains some of his most fully realized human characters. With uncanny insight, Jorge Luis Borges takes us inside the minds of an unrepentant Nazi, an imprisoned Mayan priest, fanatical Christian theologians, a woman plotting vengeance on her father’s “killer,” and a man awaiting his assassin in a Buenos Aires guest house. This anthology also contains the hauntingly brief vignettes about literary imagination and personal identity collected in The Maker , which Borges wrote as failing eyesight and public fame began to undermine his sense of self. Penguin Classics is the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world, representing a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. Review: Borges is a wonderful writer - This book is most book like with printing on paper. Review: New to Borges....better late than never. - When I was in Buenos Aires used to go to the famous cafe Borges used to frequent every morning and read a couple of his short stories. Wow wow wow! What a writer. Im ashamed to say I have only recently heard of this great man. After each story I used to go for a walk to get my mind around it. Borges took me to places i have never been before.

An Essential Classic
Incredible piece of literature that inspired generations of creatives and authors alike. JLB’s concise but vivid storytelling techniques are the ground work to thematic recollections and imaginative narrations of historic and mythical events. Highly recommend.

This is fantastic in more ways than one
This is fantastic in more ways than one. It is not science fiction but more like Twilight Zone. It will make you stop and think a lot. The cover is a perfect one for what is inside.

Aleph
I bought it for the "Aleph" but, and, I also liked all the other stories. My first approach to Borges. Stimulating reading, well developed characters with some unexpected twists. I enjoyed it very much.

Great book
This is my first Borges book, and I'm rather impressed. I don't read a lot of short fiction, but this is very good.

Master of the twist
I've never come across a writer like this before. This book and Fictions are historic creations. I think Chekhov has competition for greatest short story writer of all time.

over-imaginative
The author is a famous writer and has got many awards to his credit. So, I dare not write a ‘literary’ review. Yet, after reading the book, I cannot keep quiet. I will jot down my impressions and call it quits. There were no blogs or Internet in the days that this book was written. The short stories (many are less than half a page) of this book fit the description of blogs better. Some, in fact, are not stories at all, but musings. One thing remarkable about the author is that the author is highly imaginative; irrationally so at tmes. Past, present, future, reality, the unreal, philosophy, mysticism, existing, non-existing, everything is jumbled up. Again and again, you can see that certain themes are repeated. The author seems to be obsessed by labyrinths. Every alternate story (not literally) has a labyrinth. Frankly, after a while one really gets bored. Thankfully, it is not a thick book.

Nice but wet
The book is amazing and the edition too, but the delivery was terrible, they sent it to the wrong address and the package was outside all night, it was completely wet.
