Proper training can be critical to the success of an athlete and, for that matter, someone who is intent on improving his or her health. Just what does it take to become a certified personal trainer? There are several different certifications, but this one zeros in on the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certification.In the front matter of this book several certifications are discussed, including the American Council on Exercise (ACE) Certification, the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certification, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) - Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) as well as the ACSM. The advantages and disadvantages are outlined for each one of them. For example, one of the advantages of taking the ACSM is that the “certification is excellent at teaching how to manage and stratify risks with new clientele.”On the other hand one of the disadvantages of taking on this particular certification is that some “ACSM exams require a bachelor’s degree in exercise science or a related field.” Of course most people have already researched requirements for this particular certification. Details for the ACSM are included, including the four domain areas, the number of question, the percentage of questions, and the scoring. FYI, you’re going to have to have a 550 to pass. Checking out the ASCM website would be a wise move even before purchase of any study / prep exams.The “unseen” resources that are of particular value aren’t found in this book, but rather are complementary ones available online. They include the following:•► ONLINE RESOURCES:Practice TestFlash CardsCheat SheetsYouTube video, “From Stress to Success”Throughout the book there are small sidebars with icons. These indicate things you should take note of. For example, one claims that “Falls in older adults often occur due to breaks that happen ‘before’ they hit the ground due to loss of bone mineral density.” Each set of practice question is prefaced by what I would consider an overview of material that most people have already learned in courses. This material is illustrated with figures demonstrating an exercise.There are numerous, informative charts and graphs to check out. In the back is a complete practice test followed by the test along with answers. This is an excellent test prep guide for anyone considering taking the ACSM. As I often say, it doesn’t hurt to take several different types of tests in order to prepare for the “real” exam, but this is one of the more affordable ones I’ve seen.This book courtesy of the publisher. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Helpful *by H***. on January 11, 2019* PSA: I am currently working on a minor in Kinesiology/Exercise Science, so to a degree I was already somewhat prepared for the exam - I bought this book for supplemental reasons.The book did a great job of covering what the majority of the test covered. If you are unfamiliar with vocabulary related to client relations, this book is especially helpful - the section I did best on.
