The insert with the external threads get screwed into the top of each wooden leg and then the threaded stud gets screwed into the insert so the stud sticks out from each leg. Then each leg gets screwed into the plates. **Q: Is there a leg height limit for these brackets?** A: I believe there is but I don't know the actual specifications. I would say no more than 10" if it has to hold up any actual weight. **Q: So, is the thread American 5/16," or metric 8mm???** A: I think it is 5/16”.
