What was I waiting for?
Every week I found myself going to Sonic to get their yummy ice. It was a fight to get it home in one piece and refrozen in my freezer without it turning into a solid chunk of ice! Once summer hit, I knew it was going to be harder so I looked into investing to my own "sonic ice maker" and found this one. I debated about getting the water attachment, but decided since I got it on sale, I'd do myself a favor and get it. If you are questioning getting the water attachment, do it!! I'm so thankful I got the attachment. Our family goes through so much ice a day that I'm filling the water attachment several times a week. Now here is my only complaint about the water attachment - it's really hard to hold/handle to fill the water in the container. For me, it's a two person job as I use my Zero Water Filter Container to fill the water tank - one to hold the water tank and one to push the nozzle of the water filter container. Without that side container, you would have to pull the ice basket out and fill the water from underneath, which can be messy as some ice does slip through the holes of the ice basket. So if you are on the fence, get it!! Cons - my sidetank lid came to me scratched as well as the lid of the ice maker. It bothered me when I first bought it, but to send it back over scratches wasn't worth the hassle so I kept it. I see it now and still wish I sent it back and had it fixed, but the reality is I'm sure it would have gotten scratched sooner or later. The feet of the ice maker are sharp and scratched up the counter where I initially had the ice maker. I wish it wasn't so sharp and I hadn't ruined my brand new counters. While the machine is supposed to have a humming noise when the ice makes, sometimes it gets loud. But in apartment living where everything is so condensed and open, you are going to hear everything. The noise is louder than my fridge (everyone said the noise wasn't louder than a fridge) and sometimes bothers me with its noise. I wish there was a place to put the ice scooper. Right now it sits on the inside/top of the ice, but sometimes it gets burried in the new ice. If the ice scooper had a hole in it, I could hang it on the outside of the ice maker. Lastly people have asked if the inside of the ice area is a freezer. While it's cold on the inside where the ice is made, it all sits together and keeps the area cold. As it melts, it goes through the basket and recycles the water to make new ice. I believe that's everything about this amazing ice maker. GET THE SIDE TANK and save yourself the headache!

FAILS IN 1 YEAR. FACTOR DELIVERED DEFECTIVE UNIT DESIGN. DO NOT BUY. THIS IS YOUR WARNING
I wish I would have looked into this more. Like most reviews, figured going with the premium "Profile" GE product I would get quality. Completely wrong. This thing must cost $100 to make, because it is CHEAP. My unit started the squeeling, eventually stopped making ice. I cleaned it, and cleaned it regularly with white vinegar. No change... being an engineer I opened it up. First thing I see? The entire inside of this unit is full of white dried hardwater stains. See my picture attached. This thing is not sealed, it leaks from multiple places. The entire center unit where the auger and round steel cyclinder that freezes the water was covered, in some cases rusted and corroded. I took part piece by piece to see if I could clean it better, until eventually I couldnt remove anything else. I tried to remove some of the bolts to see if I could reach the auger... they were so badly deteriorated they had become fixed to the bottom plate which inevitably destroyed the threads... not exactly sure what those did, and because of how badly it was corroded I decided to put them back into the holes and test it out again after my deep cleaning. The unit ended up freezing up, auger continued to run, and it completly twisted the shaft until the copper line to the compressor popped and released all of the refrigderant. Now back to the freezing over and defrosting issues. During my journey of tearing this thing down and reading the reddit posts... there have been a few people who have suggested adding a fan to the back. This is wrong, not only is this wrong but possibly dangerous. The issue for the heat/lack of defrosting or freezing over is because the fan blows air over the coils, which is supposed to dissapate the heat and sent cold refrigerant back to the steel cylinder but dust/hair/dirt etc acclumilates INSIDE the unit, on the back side of the coils which you cannot reach, cannot see and cannot clean. This unit is 100% improper and knowingly poor design from the engineers and the factory. These units are defective IN THE BOX, STRAIGHT FROM THE FACTORY. It will not and cannot survive longer than a year because there is no way to actually access or clean the inside of the unit, and the parts who touch water are not properly sealed.

So easy and just works
We just moved to a new rental home with no ice maker. I'm the full embodiment of Americans love for ice and trays just don't keep up. I love water cold enough to give me a brain freeze if I drink it too fast. I googled a bunch of reviews and guides online and hit a wall of confusion. Some apparently just make a round of ice and turn off so you have to be present to move it to the freezer. There was just an overall lack of explanation for someone like me who knows nothing about these and never owned one. I asked around with friends and family and was told this model was great. The new price gave me sticker shock but at the time of purchase the used-like new was about a third the cost and within budget. We've only had it a couple days but it's so easy and simple. I just add distilled water (not required but I'm hoping will provide more time between cleanings) and hit the on button. All I've done since is add water. Within twenty minutes I had a tiny pile of ice enough for a glass of ice water. The scooper is cute but ice falls off the end very easy. I ended up using a small scooper that came with a storage canister. So far everyone in our home loves it and I wanted to share a review in case anyone else had the same confusion looking at the hundreds of options. I think I'll likely buy the side tank in the near future. It makes some noise but it is akin to when the fridge is running. For context I notice it but don't need to adjust the TV volume.

Ice is great but after 6 months sounds like a freight train slamming on the brakes on metal
This worked for 6 months and had good ventilation and regular descaling and cleaning but it is making the most horrendous sound now. I have spent way too much time calling and trying to get help from GE as it is under warranty for 5 more months but they want me to spent hours running hot vinegar thru it multiple times then hot water and it is not going to make this stop. The instructions they sent me even after I did what the manual says to do is ridiculous. They will do anything to avoid repairing or replacing this item. We actually have another one of these in our main residence and it is great with no issues. it is actually much older than the one that sounds like a freight train so It is for sure a problem not our use of it. I would only buy one of these if you have time to spare to clean it and make sure you are willing to take a risk of a dud.

Short life. Do not buy! USE DISTILLED WATER!!!!!SEE GE'S REPLY BELOW
The unit worked very good for a few months. You have to clean it weekly or sooner and that is a big ordeal. After cleaning it may work for 4 or 5 days then comes the loud screeching noise that sounds throughout the house. I wish I could get my money back. Very disappointed. DO NOT BUY!!!! GE REPLY----My name is Shiquita, and I received your concern regarding your Opal Ice Maker making a loud noise and not functioning in the way that it is supposed to. Taking into consideration the information that you provided, I have provided some information below that I'm hopeful will resolve your issue. A common reason for the unit producing loud, obnoxious noises is due to it needing to be thoroughly cleaned and descaled. Aside from the recommended weekly cleaning/sanitizing cycles using water and bleach, the icemaker must be descaled to remove mineral deposits which can buildup over time. This will definitely contribute to the icemaker making excessive noises. Water quality is extremely important to the functionality and required maintenance of the Opal Ice Maker. Depending on the type of water that it used in the icemaker, even filtered water, it can impact the functionality of the appliance. With that being said, distilled water is the recommended type of water to use in the icemaker. If you're using anything other than distilled water, the icemaker may necessitate more frequent cleanings and descalings besides the suggested weekly cleanings and monthly descalings. As an attempt to resolve your issue, please attempt to descale the icemaker using HOT, white vinegar. You will need to perform 2 cleaning cycles with the white vinegar and then allow the vinegar to sit in the icemaker for 18 hours. Following the 18 hours, you will drain the vinegar and then perform 3 additional cleaning cycles with fresh, HOT water each time. Also, take a soft cloth and pour vinegar onto it. Stick that cloth up into the ice chute and let it sit for the 18 hours as well. It may necessitate performing this process a few times to see some results. If you continue to experience issues after following the recommended steps listed above, feel free to respond back to this email, and we will see how we're able to further assist. In your response, please provide video footage of the noises that you are experiencing as well as proof of purchase and a photo of the back of the icemaker. Thanks, Shiquita Tier II Opal Specialist GE Appliances, A Haier Company

Great for cold drinks but noise louder than I expected
I got the Opal 1 icemaker because I wanted to make edible ice and ice that would work in drinks without the traditional larger cubes, and to that end, this is perfect! It makes ice really quickly, although it takes longer than the advertised 7 mins to get usable ice. The initial ice is barely frozen and in a very small quantity. It's more like 15-20 mins before you get enough good ice for a few drinks (depending on the cup size). What I wasn't expecting is the vibrations from it. Others have stated it's fairly loud and even the instructions have a half page dedicated to "normal operating sounds". However it's not obnoxiously loud. It's more like a dishwasher level of sound. It does vibrate quite a bit though, so depending on the surface you put it on or where on your countertop it's sitting (corner is louder than by itself) and depending on your house, it may be anywhere from tolerable to "return it". I can hear the vibrations of it from upstairs, but it's not because of the noise from the machine, it's from the vibrations as it does it's thing. It's sitting in a bar area, on a granite countertop and you can feel it from quite far away. I did notice that the metal shell of the ice maker tended to rattle so I ended up solving that by having a large bottle push against it and that stopped the rattle. Other reviewers took the shell off and added padding to the inside, but I wasn't prepared to void my warranty quite yet. The bottle (or anything that's heavy enough to press against the side) works well enough. With that being said, I don't think the noise/vibration is a deal breaker. It makes ice relatively quickly, so I have been turning it on when I need ice, then turning it off 30 mins later when the hopper is mostly full. This works for me as the ice stays frozen for quite a while after I turn it off, and I'm the only one taking ice from it. If you have a lot of people in your house that want ice all the time, this strategy obviously won't work for you. I took off 1 star because of the vibration, but otherwise this seems to be an icemaker that works as advertised and is from a reliable brand. If you are looking for a nugget ice maker and don't need large volumes of ice, this is a great solution that is easy to setup, easy to use and seems well thought out.

Perfect Ice
The GE Nugget Ice Maker is easily one of the best upgrades you can add to your kitchen. It makes that soft, chewable “sonic-style” nugget ice that’s seriously addictive and instantly makes any drink better. It produces ice fast and keeps it coming all day, so you’re never waiting around. The texture is perfect crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and it cools drinks way better than regular ice. What really makes it stand out is how premium it feels. The design looks clean on the counter, and the whole system runs smoothly without much effort. Overall, it’s one of those products you don’t realize you needed until you have it and then you use it every single day. If you love good ice, this thing is 100% worth it.

This thing makes proper nugget ice
Probably the best thing Ive ever bought myself. Its much bigger than what I expected but should fit on most countertops. Im a dialysis patient and prefer to just much on ice through the day keep my fluids low. Its makes perfect chewable ice just like the ice they give you in the hospitals. Made by GE cant go wrong with this product.

Started making loud screeching noise randomly day and night
I thought I was happy with this ice machine but we have had it less than a year and it’s started making loud screeching noises randomly.. sometimes in the middle of the night I have to wake up and unplug it. Tried contacting GE but unable to get through even though it is during business hours. Not impressed considering how expensive it was in the first place. I expected it to last a long time.
