Very thin plastic. I put mine on the hook so I can't say if the other way to attach it would have been the better way to go. Amazon should be ashamed of themselves for offering an installer at a rate of $450. That MUST be a typo because any honest installer could get this done for a lot more like $45. It's EASY. Don't pay, just do it yourself or ask a neighbor to help out.Now, on to the product. It really is beautiful. The seedy glass is amazing. It gives a wet appearance all the time. Since I like to use an original LIFX bulb, the larger size of this product perfectly accommodates the larger bulb. I am left wondering if the frosted glass model might not have been a better choice for concealing that bulb and maybe even distributing that color throughout the globe more evenly, but I'm very happy with it nonetheless. It's certainly the most attractive post top on the street.But the icing on the cake for me is that I can order matching fixtures for the house. I didn't know that when I chose this product, so it's really a nice surprise. I look forward to doing that in the not too distant future.The larger size might make changing the bulb a bit more difficult for shorter people. So use an LED. An Edison Style LED Bulb would be simply magnificent in this fixture.The fixture I received did have a small scratch on it. But it's an outdoor light and it's going to see more wear and tear for sure. So I put it up anyway.
