The pieces are very sturdy, and lifelike enough that he could recognize them. The storage basket is especially nice. The Velcro attachments are somewhat inset into each half of the food so that there is no edge to start peeling and come off. It makes a fun crunch when you cut it with the knife. The set looks like it will hold up well.
