They are curled on either side toward the middle. Yes they are hollow but not a continuous circle so unsuitable as straws. **Q: Do these have a harvested date on them to know how fresh they are?** A: Mine has "Mfg Date 09/28/2017, and Best Used by 09/28/2019" on the lower right corner of the back label. I assume the manufacturer date means when it was rolled into sticks and put into bags.
