Review: Absolutely love it! A must have for the traveler or the student. But read tip before buying - Pros: Affordable High quality Very secure Pivot makes it always find a good angle Lock mechanism works great Snaps right in to place without keys Cons: Precaution must be taken when installing the part which stays in the laptop Important observation!!! In some laptops, the plastic housing of the laptop has a gap between this plastic housing, and the internal metal chasis to which the Kensington lock attaches. The problem with this is that if you tighten the screw too much, it will bend the housing, and when you attach the lock, if you bend it downward it will pop off without using any key or code. This has a solution! The only thing you have to do is tighten the screw only till it makes resistance, and no more. trust me, it will not come off. As long as you don't tighten the screw too much, this lock will not snap off when bent as other reviewers had mentioned. And even when it does snap off, this is a fault on behalf of the laptops manufactured for not following Kensingtons guidelines, not the locks fault. I just can't express how much I love this product. Being a student, it's great to be able to leave my laptop while I leave for lunch in the middle of a busy library knowing that it will be there when you come back. But first, since this is a lock lets talk about security. I had an old laptop with a Kensington Lock port, so I decided to give this a try. I installed it, and pulled on the lock, bended it, and did everything I possibly could, and there was no way I could break the lock and make it separate. And I'm not a small guy (yesterday I broke my personal bench press record at 300lbs, so you get the idea). There is virtually nothing you can do in a quite library to break the lock without alerting anyone else in the process. Give me a hammer and sure, it's gone, but I would expect the laptop to break before the lock (the internal part which houses the Kensington port). So yes, the lock is very secure. And what about the cable? it is definitely very high quality. Just about as thick as practical for it's intended use. Any thicker and you wouldn't bother to use it because of the inconvenience. Any thinner and I wouldn't trust it. And like all cables, it can be cut, but you would definitely need a very high quality cable cutter to do so, so I would only fear the professional and very determined criminal. And if that were the case, you would be losing your laptop in any case. But in any cafe or library, the most likely scenario is that he would look for someone else to rob, period. So in conclusion, I love it, and will probably buy another. There is no reason you should loose your laptop for not using something as convenient as this. Invest in a 25$ lock, and forget about buying another 600$ laptop. If it's been helpful, please give it a yes below if you have a sec. In any case, thanks for reading and have a nice day!
Review: It's a solid lock, but coming from the company that created the standard, I expected much better (UPDATED 08/2015) - PROS: It seems very sturdy, locks quickly - easy is slipping it on. Don't have to worry about having the correct combination to lock, only to unlock. Comes with a cable tie for easy cable management. NEUTRAL: Thick 5mm braided cable gives me some extra peace of mind, but is also less flexible so there some added hassle to the lock to something. CONS: On one of my laptops the lock doesn't actually lock if the stub is tightened securely and requires regular adjustment. The combination keys are very rigid and small, so they are difficult to turn, especially one at a time; requires some break-in. Once broken in, the keys rotate more freely. Thoughts: The locking mechanism is a stub that is placed into the lock port and secured by tightening a hex screw. On my Clevo W230SS laptop the lock will not properly latch onto the stub if the sub is tightened securely, and even worse if it is too tight, it seems to lock, but if you wiggle it enough the lock will pop right off. When tightening you have to ensure it has ample wiggle room when screwing in the stub, but when it does have wiggle room, it will gradually get more loose over time to the point where the stub will fall out. It has to be tightened about once a week and is tightened by a 1.5 Hex key, but I've also used T6 Torx screwdriver. It wouldn't be so bad if it was a size 0 Phillips head since the screw isn't accessible when the lock is in place, and Phillips is way more common. The key that comes with the lock is very small and very easy to misplace. Fortunately, as a geek, I carry a screwdriver with me at all times, and have hex and Torx bits in addition to the standard Phillips and flat head bits, so finding something to tighten the screw isn't as much of a hassle for me, but it something to consider if you don't already have such a screwdriver. However, I recently got a Lenovo X220, which has a perfectly rigid metal chassis, and the nub fits snugly and securely, unlike my W230SS. You really have to make sure your laptop is built well and has a perfectly flat and rigid surface where the lock hole is. The locking mechanism being as picky as it is is a gross oversight, especially at this price range - I expect a lock to be able to just work, especially when I can get one that is universal for half the price; hit or miss is utterly unacceptable for a nearly $30 lock. However the lock seems very secure, and when paired with the right laptop, is very convenient to lock. If that experience was universal, this would be a perfect 5-Star lock, but it is hit or miss, and if you're less fortunate you might be required to put up with regular adjustments and risk the nub falling out, or the lock not fully latching to the nub. Overall, I prefer another lock that I got for $10 less on desertcart to protect my much more valuable gaming laptop which makes me that much more disappointed by this particular lock. However, I feel 100% confident with this lock on my X220. When it works, the experience and confidence it inspires is great, but the hit n miss nature of this lock makes it disappointing, much more so considering the name and price it commands.

### ⭐ worthless piece of junk
*by G***S on October 3, 2013*

Purchased this for my son at college. Worked only for three weeks and now will not release. Laptop is locked to his desk and he cannot use it for class. Called Kensington Customer Support. The first person suggested to lubricate the combination wheels with WD40. Then they insisted he accidentally reset the combination which is impossible unless you intend to reset it. Second person said they would send a new lock if we hired a bonded locksmith to remove the lock. I asked if they would pay for the locksmith. He couldn't answer this until he spoke with his supervisor. From reading a previous review I don't expect much so I will bring my Dremel and cut the cable then try pliers to remove the lock from the laptop and WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER KENSINGTON PRODUCT AGAIN! If I could have given this a rating of ZERO stars I would have. UPDATE - Finally heard back from Kensington Technical Customer Support. They "admitted" the tumblers can become jammed if turned too many times and the keyed lock is much more reliable. They offered to reimburse us up to $80 to have a locksmith remove it from my son's laptop, however, by that time he had removed it himself by taking a pair of pliers and squeezing the release button. As these locks can be removed so quickly and easily with readily available tools, it gives the uninformed a false sense of security. One should understand the true function of these locks act as a deterrent as the potential thief will go after the laptop that has no security.
