I switched over to "modern", hard case luggage one side has an internal harness that holds clothes and the other side of the luggage is just a massive open space with a fabric zipper) recently and found that I don't love the cavernous side where clothes just crash around into each other during travel and spill out when you open your suitcase. These compression cubes are the perfect, low cost solution, as you can pack your clothes into them and put them into the large compartment and don't have to worry about everything falling out into a giant mess when you open your suitcase. It's a much nicer experience to pack and unpack when you don't have to reorganize things each time. You can also pack them and zip them down to be teeny tiny little packages which allows you room for other things (note: this compresses size, but not weight, so doesn't really allow you to pack "more", unless you want to pack more lightweight things).
