I just bought it in hardcover to give to her for her birthday, since apparently she is going to love it forever. The first sentence my daughter ever read (age four) was in this book, I found out years later. The sentence was, "Not I, said the cat." If the original story of the Little Red Hen bugs you because the lazy animals are motivated by punishment rather than reward, you will like this book much better. In this version the Little Ren Hen still gets no help in the production phase, but she shares the fruits of her labor anyway. Her grateful friends then clean up for her while she rests. Both my two daughters and I adore the illustrations in The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. They are made by cutting and gluing various papers. I have looked at them of over 10 years, and I still always find something new to admire. I have looked for other books illustrated with cut paper by this same illustrator but have not found any, which is a true loss to the world of children's books. I'm a kindergarten teacher and I have to read The Little Red Hen as part of our Teamwork unit. I always read The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza afterward, and my students always like it better than the original because all the animals are treated well.
