Hope this helps you. **Q: Does the Charcoal filter replace the pods, can or do you use both?** A: The pods are charcoal filters. My coffeemaker isn't equipped with any other filtering except the paper filters we use for the grounds. We have very hard water, so I filter the kitchen faucet system as well. Descaling the pot as recommended helps, but that isn't sufficient with our tap water. Without doing either of these, we would need to buy a new machine annually at best. Just keep working with it and it will work.
