Even if you are not out for a new job or promotion, automating mundane tasks is key in the server admin and tech fields I believe. Learning a robust and flexible scripting language like Perl is key. Even if you decide not to continue with Perl and choose bash, (G)AWK, Python, whatever, knowledge of Perl can only be an advantage, face it, some day if you deal with enough scripts you will run up against a Perl script that someone else wrote that you will need to maintain and this is your key to the kingdom.
