## Description

Level Sense LS2600 Surface Liquid Sensor connects to an control device accepting a switch type contact. When water or other liquid makes contact on the metal sensing tabs, the sensor will short across the liquid providing a closed signal across the wires. When no water is being detected the wires will provide and open signal. The sensor is great for protecting computer and telephone room sub-floors, water storage tanks, water heater piping, bathrooms, laundry rooms, air conditioners, and refrigerator drip pans. Use only with non flammable liquids. Not for confined spaces. *Size: L64*W15.6*H12.7mm *Housing: ABS, white *Working Voltage: 5Vdc-12Vdc *Max. Voltage: 24Vdc *Max. Working Current: 0.5A *Temperature: -10℃ ~ +65℃ *Cored cable 6 feet *red wire to Positive, *white wire to Negative (ground) *Output: NPN type Perfect for Arduio, Rasberry Pi, and home electronics projects. Application Notes (based on Feedback of users with problems): There are no electronics inside this device. It does not provide a "contact closure". It is two stainless steel coated feet, connected to conductors in a plasticized sealed coating to provide corrosion a protected environment where the wires connect to the stainless steel feet. When the unit detects water, it operates as a resistor between 0.6M ohms and 1.4M ohms (i.e. the resistance of the water its detecting). In some applications it can be directly applied but generally speaking needs to be connected to a circuit that will sense the difference between 0V and the output voltage.

Review: Just received this product. Using it to automatically add water to a pool. Connected it to an 12 bit ADC. A 10M resistor divider is required. Have ran several tests including fully submerged for hours and then fully removed from water. Works perfectly. As the device dried the voltage approaches 0V. Will put into production shortly. Update: After one season, sadly the chemistry of the pool water caused the leads to erode. As a result a different sensor maybe needed for my use. This being said the sensor did perform flawless until the erosion.
Review: When switch is open it has 2.4 Meg-Ohm resistance and when closed it has 0.4 meg-Ohm resistance. Switches typically have infinite resistance when open and < 5 ohm when closed. Therefore, switch would not allow enough current flow thru to active local audible alarm when sensed and can only flow very very small amounts of current which is not enough to activate many alarm sensors/devices.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: can this be used to turn off a 110V fan motor in a fan coil unit if leaking**
A: It can be used to detect the water, but would require it to be connected to a relay for it to directly switch a fan. If you look in the documentation there is a very simple circuit you can make with a solid state relay (search amazon for B00DDDFUZG). We recommend this relay because it is HORSEPOWER rated. This means that it has been tested for and is approved for use controlling motors. If you have DC power, this sensor, and the relay above, you can switch any motor load up to 3 HP, or any solenoid up to 50 amps.

**Q: Does it trigger when wet or submerged? if i use it for a wster pump, with a relay, would it stop as soon as the water level lowers or until dry?**
A: This device is not providing a “contact closure” it is providing a trickle current between the two contacts when water with some ionic content is present.
The Leak sensor behaves as an open circuit when no water is present, and behaves as a (roughly) 1.4MΩ resistor when water is present.
Water has to come in contact with both of the metal feet on the sensor to trigger a device.
The leak sensor will continue to provide the trickle current until both feet are no longer in contact with water.

**Q: What is the upper temperature that this can handle? can it be used to detect hot water from a water heater prv?**
A: Hello,

The leak sensor is rated to handle temperatures up to 150F.

I would imagine that this depends on how hot the water is that is coming from the hot water heater.

**Q: this sensor detect low resistance water ?**
A: Level Sense LS2600 Surface Liquid Sensor connects to a control device accepting an analog or digital input.
If you are using this in home electronics projects, please take note of the following:
•	This device is not providing a “contact closure” it is providing a trickle current between the two contacts when water with some ionic content is present.
• The Leak sensor behaves as an open circuit when no water is present, and behaves as a (roughly) 1.4MΩ resistor when water is present. The resistance of it depends on your water.
•	To confirm if the device is working, place the ohmmeter probes directly into water approximately 1.5” inches apart and take a reading. Then place the sensor in water and connect the ohmmeter to the red and white wires. The two readings should be similar.
•	To get the best circuit design, put the sensor feet in water and measure the resistance with an ohmmeter. Use this resistance in your circuit design.
•	In the unlikely event you have “non-conductive” water, it can be easily rectified by sprinkling some salt around the sensor location. The water will absorb the salt, the salt will ionize the water, and allow it to conduct.
•	If you are using this sensor as an input to an Arduino or raspberry Pi, it is recommended to use either an Analog input, or a “PULL UP” input where the sensor is taking an input to ground.

All you have to do is hook the red wire into GPIO pin in my case i used 23 and the white wire to GND on the raspberry pi. Then set pin a pull up resistor in code and test if you can read from it or not. Code (python): import RPi.GPIO as GPIO GPIO.setmode(GPIO.BCM) GPIO.setup(23, GPIO.IN, pull_up_down = GPIO.PUD_UP) if GPIO.input(23): print "no water" else: print "water"
