Review: Excellent chess board - I've been using this board for three days now and I've played 55 rapid games on lichess with it. I'm very impressed with how well the board works. It's very easy to connect it to lichess and start playing out of the box and, apart from a few minor issues, I found it worked very well and was very enjoyable to play with. Firstly, the first few games I played on it, it wouldn't recognise me moving the A1 rook. This happened in three separate games and each time it worked fine until I tried to move the A1 rook. I looked online and found someone else with the same problem, they said to hard reset the board. I did the hard reset and no longer had the problem, the board worked fine afterwards. If you need to do a hard reset on the board, remove all the pieces, turn the board on, and hold the power button until the middle squares start flashing rapidly. The only issues I had was that sometimes it wouldn't recognise my moves. I'd move a piece and it'd flash the start and end squares until I moved the piece back and moved it again. Though once you remake the move, it seems to recognise it, so that's not really a problem. On a couple of occasions, it didn't recognise the move even after remaking it, so I had to finish those games on my computer. Though this seems to be a very rare occurrence. Also a couple of times, I tried to castle kingside, and it just moved the rook to F1 without moving the king, this might have been my mistake and not the board's though, I'll see if it happens again. I also found that moving using a physical board makes me use a lot more time than I usually do. I'm used to playing 5-minute games with no increment, I played 10 minute games with no increment on the Pegasus and found that I was running down my time a lot from having to physically move the pieces for mine and my opponent's moves. The minimum time setting for the Pegasus is 8 minutes, so you can't play blitz or bullet games on it. The thing that bugs me most about this is the opponent's ratings. With normal lichess games, you get matched with someone between -100 and +100 your rating. I'm currently a 1700 player so I should be matched with 1600 to 1800 players. However, with the DGT app, it seems to match you with any player from the pool regardless of rating. I've played against players rated as low as 800 and as high as 2400. It seems to match you to someone your own rating 40% of the time, someone much lower rated 60% of the time, and only once or twice have I been matched with someone rated much higher than me. I believe the lichess API allows you to set a rating limit when sending a challenge so if possible, I would like to see this updated in the app, even allowing the user to choose their own rating levels for opponents would be very helpful. As for the pieces and the board, the board is a good size, but not too big to use on my desk, and the pieces look very nice. The pieces are plastic but they look good and seem heavy enough that they don't get knocked over too easily. Despite the small imperfections, I'm still giving this five stars. I've been playing with it a lot since I got it and I've had hours of fun with it. It feels more immersive than just playing with a mouse, and I really enjoy using it. Highly recommended for anyone who plays on lichess or chess.com who wants to try out a DGT board.
Review: Expected better quality, not quite the finished product. - As soon as I took the set out of the box I noticed significant scratches on the bottom of the board. Furthermore the white pieces are significantly marked. Not what you expect for a luxury enterainment item that you have paid £200 for. Setup wasn't as straight forward as I was expecting for such a simple device. It's not obvious that the board is on. A small indicator at the side of the board would help in this respect. Setting it up for the first time it said that "not all pieces are detected". It wasn't obvious initially why this was. What I will say now is that by re-aligning them a couple of millimeters to the centre of the square usually does the trick. The official DGT app only seems to support lichess and not chess.com. I understand that chess.com has it's own app and it supposedly supports the board. I watched a youtube video of someone setting the board up to play on chess.com however that setting was missing from the corresponding chess.com mobile app menu on my iphone. I was able to find the setting on the chess.com website and enable it however when I try to play it says 'dtg board not connected to chess.com'. I would usually play a lot of blitz and rapid on both chess.com and lichess.com however given that the board quite often misses moves it just isn't feasible or pleasant to attempt to play at those time controls. I have come to understand the little light dance, through trail and error, that means it's got confused and that I need to undo the last 2 half moves and try again. My final gripe is the battery life. I played a few hours and the battery life dropped by abour 20%. Don't get me wrong it is wonderful to play over the board chess again for the first time in about 5 years. I'm sure I will use the device but I'm not going to be calm enough to play my best chess because of all the little frustations :). Given the poor condition the board came to me in and the little niggles around missed moves and chess portal connections I feel as if I have overpaid for this. If it were a budget offering at say £90 then I think probably a lot more could be forgiven. As it is I'll probably use it for a while and then invest in something with a more polished experience in the future now that I know this general product category is something I could potentially get a lot of enjoyment from.

Love it great board. There are some comments on battery drain but if you make sure it's properly switched off you should be fine.
