As far as how this fire starter performs? Well it goes above and beyond, seriously, this stuff burns quite hot as well as for a lengthy period of time as advertised; sure to get any emergency fire going in even terrible conditions! It's entirely wind resistant, you can drop it in the water, it'll float, then you merely squeeze any water out and it will ignite just fine. Also it's extremely easy to ignite, a tiny spark, or just touching a lighter / match flame to the "fluffed" prepared end of it and it lights instantly. The only downside is how harsh this stuff is.. Trust me when I say, you do NOT want to be near the smoke this putty emits; not even a bit of it breathed in from the wind coming back at you. I was steering clear of it, but when I tested out it's resistance to wind by blowing on it several times; I pulled in a few bounced back / mild inhalations of the smoke and it was absolutely terrible. My nose, up through my sinuses, trachea, bronchial tubes and eyes all burned rather severely for 35-40 minutes until it began to subside. I took my gloves off and removed my contacts, flushing my eyes as well as getting fresh air until it improved but it was not a good time. It is extremely irritating due to the composition of the putty (synthetics & metal oxides) that you are burning.. So, you definitely want to wear gloves when prepping a piece of this to start a fire, and stay out of the smoke. If you don't have gloves, do yourself a favor and do not touch your face or rub your eyes after handling it. I wore gloves, but the smoke really was unpleasant despite being such a small brief dose of it. No wonder there is the green putty that's a "bug repellant" XD Anyway, it IS a synthetic fire starter marketed for emergencies / survival / etc so it's not a reason to avoid buying it. For it's intended purpose, it absolutely performs very well, exceeding all expectations. Really, there's nothing else out there on the market like it that works as well as this does. The irritation aspect is no different than say, liquid fuel, I wouldn't get that in my eyes or breathe it in either; my experience was merely an unfortunate, unintended incident that occurred. I still thought this should be known so that you don't stay too close to it while its burning, or rather, just don't be downwind of it when building up your fire initially and you will be just fine. Overall, it's worth the money if you wish to have a reliable, powerful, compact, and affordable emergency fire starter for whatever your needs may be!

I've used Pyro Putty on many camping trips, longer ridge runs, and once in an emergency. It's not typically necessary if you know fire starting but can make the difference when rain soaks all available kindling. On a recent trip out we were hit with 9 hours of deluge in West Virginia. Everyone expected a cold, wet night. The hour before reaching camp I started picking dead twigs off branches and stuffing them in my jacket to dry them off. A couple fistfulls of still damp tinder and a few pinches of Pyro Putty got a fire going and made enough heat to dry and light fingerwood. After that, despite a light drizzle we built a roaring fire and everyone's memories are of a fun adventure. The other great thing about this material is that it is relatively safe and easy to use. My 9 year old daughter can now build and light her own campfires and has started the basics of cooking her mac & cheese. The confidence building and reliable results for new campers is worth the price alone.

I wanted to give this product a real test. I took a ball just less than a quarter size to see what it would do to a damp board. I went out in the yard and found a damp “stick” that had been lying around. Please see pic #1. It was by no means a piece of kindling, probably around a 1x2. Let me say that this stuff ignites! I barely touched it with flame, and “poof”. No skills required to make a fire at all. The pyro putty burnt hot and long. At about the 4 minute mark, it fell off the board. (I had turned the pyro putty to the underside of the board once lit.). See pic #2. It kept on burning, and was no problem to continue burning the board. At the 7 minute mark, there was still a nice flame going...pic #3. At the 12 minute mark, pic 4, there has been considerable burning to both the board, and the board under the pyro putty (note: the board under the putty was a remnant from a prior fire in the pit.). Their claims that a quarter size ball will burn for 15 minutes is true and accurate. It is also true that this is an amazing product, which I will recommend to anyone I talk to about fire-starting or anything of the like. The next night, I wanted to actually see how little I could get away with and start a real fire using kindling, etc. let me say that again, no skills are needed with this product. Just grab and be impressed. Great stuff! Highly recommend.

I purchased many items through Amazon in reference to the off grid world constantly trying and testing I can say that this product does what it says at a reasonable cost which most products out there I find don’t so heads up for this new and impressive product I say Pyro putty is a winner

Lights easy and burns hot. I found that wetfire cubes do burn a little better but they cannot be broken up or shaped easily. That's where this putty dominates because you can break it up and it doesn't crumble all over the place. Works nicely to form on the end of a stick and use that to light the fire. Looking forward to trying the winter blend when the weather gets colder.
