I have been buying Hot Tools marcel irons for years. If you have hair that won't keep a curl, this is a great iron. It gets really hot and makes nice lasting curls. This barrel is 1.25 inches around which makes a nice soft curl. The iron is the same length as any curling iron and has an extra long cord making it easier to move around the bathroom. After learning how to use a marcel, I can never go back to spring irons again. With marcel grips, you can control the curl so much better and clip the hair much tighter. This is the least expensive marcel I have found and it works like any professional iron.

I believe this had a few negative reviews because it can be difficult for people who aren’t familiar with the marcel style curling iron. Most professionals use marcel curling irons. This isn’t your typical spring curling iron. You have to understand how to use them and know that they work differently. I thought that this was a great value for the money! Works just as well as more higher priced professional marcel irons! Created amazing curls! I highly suggest this curling iron for anyone experienced with a marcel style iron. If you have only used spring curling irons, please know that this isn’t for you unless you are attempting to learn how to use a professional marcel.

After recently cutting about 2 feet off of my naturally curly hair, I was surprised to find out my curls disappeared and turned into more of a stringy wave. Not particularly flattering. I've never really used a curling iron on a regular basis but needed something to help make my hair appear "done" as opposed to "I just woke up". I had no idea how to use this when I purchased it, I just saw a few beachy wave hair tutorials that mentioned the use of the Marcel iron. The spinning handles terrified me. The first day I used it, I used it incorrectly and while my hair looked nice, it was not the look I was going for. The next day I watched a few youtube videos on how to use it, and attempted again. WOW! I got exactly the look I was going for and it didn't take very long at all. I am usually a wash and go girl, so the small amount of it took to create the waves I was going for surprised me. The thing that's great for me is the adjustable temperature setting. I can turn it up as hot as I need to. With course thick hair you generally need a little more heat than most curling irons provide. And after I mastered the use of the curling iron I was intimidated by the spinning handle, in fact, it's great. I don'tt think I Will go back to my regular iron or wand for a while. I definitely recommend this iron.

The Marcel handle takes practice but if you are patient enough it works so much better than a regular curling iron. I had my hairstylist show me because everyone in her salon uses these. I've used the 1 1/4in marcel iron for three years and it's the best for my long thick hair. Here's the downside... This brand of marcel curling irons break. A lot. Far more than they should. I have used them consistently for three years and I've gone through 6 marcel curling irons that are the hot tools brand. The issues with them are a plethora of things. Here are all the different things that have happened to my hot tools marcel curling irons (these didn't all happen at the same time, just a list of the issues from all 6): -The hot part of the wand becomes wobbly and like it's going to break off (not something you want to happen on an iron that can burn you in a millisecond!) -The plastic covering on the bar where you hold it to open and close the wand comes off. This happened to almost all of them that I have owned. The little bulb thing on the end gets cracked and when it comes off, the rest of the covering goes too. -It turns on but doesn't stay on...electrical issue with the cord going into the wand. If I rotate the handle a certain way it stays on but the moment I pick it up to use it, it's off. -It simply won't turn on at all. -Turns on but doesn't get hot I've asked my hairstylist if she has had the same issues and she said never. I don't really get it though...I've bought 6 of them and I don't believe I'm overly aggressive here...I'm not banging them against the wall or anything. I have regular curling irons and other hair appliances for years, even a decade. But not this one. It's disappointing because it does work so well.
