Review: External Control with Model 76 works - I am a happy customer - Works as expected. If you want the Dehumidifier to read the humidity at the location of Model 76 and not at the location of the device (1850 in my case), you have to setup the device to run in External Control mode. I had issues in making the device work in External Control mode and I could not find any documentation on the internet on how to address it. Eventually, I was able to fix the issue with help of Brent at technical support at Aprilaire. I am documenting the solution below. Solution: The main problem is unclear documentation. The model 76 remote works just fine in external control mode. You have to wire it as described, turn it on and let it be for at least 3 minutes. After 3 minutes the machine will turn on and you will see dehumidifying on the top right of the screen. Neither the Model 76 nor the main screen on the dehumidifier will give any display readout about it (it just appears that model 76 is on and nothing is happening at the dehumidifier). This is not documented in the installation instructions manual and what confused me / threw me off was the fact that when you use the same device in remote control mode it doesn't take 3 minutes to turn on, It just turns on immediately. I am assuming that it is performing air sampling at the model 76 location for 3 minutes before it turns on the machine but without any readout, I cannot be sure. Brent will try to have a reply written from Aprilaire's account about this and he will try to have them include this in the instructions manual down the line as well. I didn't want to crawl into my crawlspace to check the unit and the humidity level and/if the unit has a error code on the display. So I installed this unit (in my closet) and configured it as a remote device. I can now see the current humidity levels in my crawlspace and if the unit has an issue, I'll know ASAP. However, there is no "set point" on the dehumidifier control. You can only set it to remove more or less humidity. The aprilaire dehumidifier I had it hooked to broke in 2 1/2 years. Aprilaire covered it under warentee; however, you have to get an AC technician to certify it is broke before they will replace it. It cost me $150 to have it certified as broke. I had to uninstall it and they sent me a new one. I put the new one in and it broke in about 2 or 2 1/2 years. I gave it to an AC technician. They fixed it and it broke again in 2 to 2 1/2 years. However, he could not fix it as Aprilaire does not sell a lot of replacement parts and the ones they sell are incredibly expensive. Oh, I installed this dehumidifer control and it broke in about 1 1/2 years. Aprilaire Tech Support Team **Q: I have the aprilaire 1850. i need to know exactly what kind of low voltage wire to use to connect the dehumidifier unit to the external control.** A: There is special wire that is sold for use with an air conditioning or furnace thermostat. The outside of the wire is typically brown. The internal wires are color coded. This wire is sold with 4 wires or 6 wires. The 6 wire one is more expensive. You need 4 wires. So go to any Lowes, Homedepot, Ace Hardware, etc. and you can find it. It is sold by the foot, or sometimes in pre-cut lengths. The dehumidifier has a main control panel. As you are looking at the intake air side of the dehumidifier, it is located on the left top just below the knob that allows you to adjust the humidity setting. On this control panel, in the lower left is a terminal block, for wires. The connection points are labeled A, B, +, -. On the external control there is a terminal block with connections labeled A, B, +, -. The wires will be color coded. So, pick a color. For example, pick red and hook it to the A terminal on the dehumidifier, and the A terminal. Pick another color like yellow. Hook the yellow wire on the B at the unit and on the B at the control. This is a low voltage (24 v) low current application. Therefore, this wire is designed to do exactly what you want it to do. You might want to consider not buying the external control. I had two of these. They do not last long, like a couple of years. You can only set them for wetter or dryer. You cannot set them at a specific set point. So, if you want 55% humidity in your house you cannot set the controller at 55%. You have to increase and decrease, on the controller, the amount of "wetness" you desire. The knob on the dehumidifier does the same thing. The return air, which is at the same humidity as your house gets pulled across a sensor in the dehumidifier. This knob adjusts the wetness of the air just like the one you mount in the room. Also, if you read the reviews on the 1850, this dehumidifier only lasts 2 to 3 years. So, within 2 or 3 years you most like will be replacing either the dehumidifier or the controller. I purchased an Ultra-Aire dehumidifier after 2 of the Aprilaire dehumidifiers broke within about a 6 year period. In my opinion, the Ultra-Aire is a much nicer dehumidifier and it last longer than the Aprilaire. Instructions have all the details needed. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Simple and easy to use, works with Aprilaire 1820 but, with some feature compromises. *by B***N on June 7, 2018* Installed and connected to an Aprilaire 1820 dehumidifer which resides in an encapsulated crawlspace. Handy little device that lets us monitor the dehumidifier status and humidity levels. Uses the 4 wire theromstat wiring and instructions were really straightforward. The 76 supports two modes, external and remote. However only Remote mode works with the 1820 which leads to some compromises. 1) You can't dial in a specific humidity setting only select between 1 and 7 with 7 being the driest relative humidity. 2) You can't tell the dehumidifier to run in circulation mode only. External mode apparently supports these features but, only with other models.
