The product is sturdy enough, and there are no splinters. I'd originally bought this for a 3yo to stimulate him. It's ended up being something the whole family gets involved with, including older siblings (7 and 10). There are many puzzles in the book, aimed at different difficulties. It's a nice old-school toy for rainy days.
