I am not a beginner, nor am I a professional woodworker. I would recommend this to almost anyone - with a couple caveats. One must have a bit of patience to break the stone in to get the max performance. The requires following the directions very closely. Take your time and let the diamonds do the work, do not try to force the plate to take off metal faster by pressing too hard. Beginners may have a problem here, but anyone can correctly use this diamond plate. I am very pleased with the performance over my old Diasharp plates I've had for too many years. I sharpened several Henckel kitchen knives, 3 pocket knives, two plane irons, and couple chisels just to get the thing to a point where I felt like it was fairly broken in.
