The NugPacker is a spring-loaded contraption that causes settlement of material in a cone. Kinda like how cereal or potato chips settle in their containers during transport. It works as advertised, though it does require a few tries to get down a reliable, efficient technique. Basically, you load a cone into a central recess, add some material, use the 'tapping' mechanism, then repeat these steps until you have loaded the cone with the amount you want at the packing firmness you want. I also used a tamper to pack the material tight before adding some more. I found that after packing three cones, I was producing firmly-packed, long-burning 98 mm cones in ~5-10 minutes each. Not a fast process, really, but the end product is very high quality, and the process is much more efficient than any other filler/filling technique Ive tried. The Nugpacker itself is made of Delrin. There is an inner cone holder within an outer sleeve. The inner cone compartment accepts any standard taper cone up to 109 mm long (King Size). The inner cone holder is attached to the outer sleeve by a spring that fuels the 'tapping' process, which packs the material in the cone. Once material has been loaded into the cone, one repeatedly tugs on the flanged top of the inner cone holder, which causes the material in the cone to settle and become more densely packed. When the cone is packed to the user's preference, it is ejected from the cone holder by inserting a key into the keyhole on the bottom of the unit. The Pro part of the Pro kit comprises a Nugsmasher 'Cone Card' for wrangling your grind, a Nugsmasher 'Canna Stick", which is a stainless steel 'key'/tamping bar (for tamping material and ejecting cones), and a stainless steel Nugsmasher 'Cone Funnel'. These accoutrements are great add-ons, though home-brewed equivalents would work just as well. I personally am happy I have them, especially the funnel, which is a brilliant piece of purpose-built metalwork. A few final remarks: The taper of the cone compartment is absolutely spot-on- practically zero material added to the cone ends up outside the cone. That speaks to the high-quality of the design and manufacturing of this little rig. For beginners, be careful not too tamp your cone too vigorously, as the cone paper can become separated from the filter tip, which is a bummer. Also, be aware that the most efficient packing results from tiny tugs on the cone holder- avoid the temptation to effect epic draws on the thing, because your material will come flying out of the top of the rig (how do I know this???). Finally, I find a medium grind, such as from the Santa Cruz Shredder (I have reviewed this elsewhere on desertcart.com), to work best, since no material will find its way through the filter tip. When that happens, one ends up with a crust of cannabis on the bottom of the rig. Not a big deal, really, but not very elegant either... Overall, I think the Nugsmasher Nugpacker Pro Kit is a well-made, highly-functional machine. Anyone who enjoys long-burning, firm cones should have one in their herbal kit.
