Review: This book helped my team win the leadership crisis challenge at Ross School of Business (University of Michigan) - "The Ross Leadership Crisis Challenge takes students and places them in a realistic crisis scenario where they act as senior executives at a major company. The event highlights critical skills useful for leaders: Using judgment to navigate a difficult situation, thinking on one's feet and persuasively articulating a point of view. Much more than a case competition, this event will test the students' ability to think clearly, integrate and apply the skills they have learned so far in the Core, and communicate under pressure. Participants compete for a $500 Merit Scholarship and a section prize." [...] Before participating in this competition, I read the Crisis Management book by Steven Fink. I paid special attention to the Crisis Communication chapters and the case studies at the end of the book. To start the competition, 20 teams of 4 students were given a crisis simulation and ~3 hours to prepare for a board of directors meeting. In this meeting we met with business school professors that grilled us on all aspects of our proposed response. The book gave me ideas for accurately identifying the crisis and helped me understand the value of transparency in communications. My team advanced to the finals, where we were put on stage in front of hundreds of classmates and teachers. Jounalists from across the country were gathered to simulate a live press conference. The journalists represented many different stakeholders - including customers, workers, community members, shareholders, and politicians. My team relied on many of the ideas in the tylenol case study to quickly prepare our message. We prioritized the health of the community, we controlled the message by being forthcoming with information, and delivered our message with poise. As a result, we each won merit scholarships. We had a great experience - I'm convinced that we wouldn't have performed as well without reading this book. Thanks!
Review: Good crisis reference - Lots of valuable advice in this book. I got it as a required read for class and I will probably keep it on the shelf for future review. Good sense of humor in the writing kept me entertained too.
