Review: Great program, extremely slow install - I am now going to review Dragon Naturally Speaking 13, Home. (Business comes with tools for using Excel and other business programs I don't use that much.) I found the installation process a little interesting as the program progress bar does not seem to move at first. After a while, when I was about ready to give up, it did move and the installation continued. However it was very, very slow. I had turned off my antivirus software as suggested and followed the prompts. Installation process was slow enough that I could have literally gone out, made a meal and then come back and found the installation still in progress. This concerned me a little because I was not sure that my computer was up to the task of running this program as expected. My computer runs Win 7 Pro, with a 2.66 GHz processor, four gigs of RAM even though Windows 7 can only utilize 3.5 gigs. I am now typing this in Word 2007 and it seems to be working quite well. When I went through the registration process, I noticed that it one point a window came up and said that it needed the serial number. The serial number was already in the box and was highlighted. When I pressed continue or next, a window popped up and said that the registration was not completed. I went back and took out the highlighted number and then retyped it using the numbers at the top of the keyboard rather than on the keypad, as previous experiences shown that some programs in some instances will not accept the import from the keypad the same way they accept information from the numbers across the top of the keyboard above the letters. DO NOT put n the hyphens, as I believe the program will not register properly if you do. There is a sentence that tells you not to put them in. Getting used to this is interesting as it seems to recognize all my words and unfortunately my bad grammar and my way of speaking in run-on sentences. However, as I learn the commands, I think that it will be quite helpful in getting my thoughts down at a higher rate of speed. So far the accuracy is very, very good probably more than 99%. It doesn’t like words like very, very good (two of the same word repeated.) I just tried using Dragon in Final Draft 2.5. I use it for script writing and for movie production. The Dragon box came up and would allow me to paste my text into the program and it seemed to work just fine. This one extra step is probably not a huge issue and will actually allow me to edit my thoughts better than if I type directly into the program. So very pleased with this program so far. Follow the instructions for installation to the letter. They are there for a reason and you probably won’t have any problems.
Review: Don't get the headset bundle - Firstly, don't purchase the disc + headset bundle. The software already comes with a headset included in the box, a fact which I discovered after ordering and receiving the bundle and ending up with an extra headset. So ordering the bundle will result in you receiving the software and the headset it comes with in one box, and another box with a second headset. That offer is quite deceiving. Despite being annoyed at spending a little extra money, I didn't consider it worth returning the extra headset since I got it all on sale for a decent price, and because I may end up needing a replacement headset at some point anyway. As for the speech recognition itself, it's decent. Not as amazing as I was hoping; I do have to spend a little time correcting mistakes, and it also slows you down to have to speak the punctuation out loud. But this is the first speech recognition software I've used, and I'm betting as far as speech recognition goes, it's good. The uses of the Home version are kind of limited because of it not being compatible with many programs, meaning it will not enter the text directly into said programs/emails/etc. for you. But it can still be used pretty much anywhere by putting the insertion point where you want the text, and then as you speak your speech will appear in Dragon's dictation box, from which you can easily transfer it to your designated spot with a simple click of the Transfer button. So, I found that pretty cool. My main reason for getting Dragon is I'm a transcriptionist and my hands tend to get tired and stiff from typing. I was hoping that me dictating and then editing would be at least as quick as me typing, as well as sparing my hands from strain, but so far, it's not really been worth it due to the time it takes to continually transfer the speech from the dictation box into my program, which gets me behind from dictating the words from the audio I'm listening to, so then I have to skip back the audio once the dictation box gets out of the way, plus edit any mistakes I see, and I actually find it easier to manually insert punctuation when I review each portion that I transfer rather than speaking all of the punctuation. Eventually I may be able to make it work out better, but so far, it slows me down a bit, so I only use it sometimes. Just figured I'd explain that for anyone else considering this for transcription. But the speech recognition aspect is decent as long as you're willing to check for mistakes. There tend to be at least a couple or few mistakes per paragraph in my experience so far.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I want to write a book, can I use this to save a lot of time and pain?**
A: I wanted to write a book and tried many times to make it easier by using Dragon NaturallySpeaking. The program had the opposite effect. I spent so much effort trying to get the program to do its job, I could not "get words on paper." Finally, yesterday, I gave up and removed all Nuance files from my computer. I found a better way (for me) to write. I use Microsoft Word to type at my own speed, not worrying about misspellings (because that would slow me down.) Then, when I've finished my thoughts for that session, I use spell-check to come up with a well-written piece. Voila! Easier and far faster than Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

**Q: Does this software work for transcribing meetings live or from an audio recording - or will it only transcribe one voice?**
A: Depends on your expectations. Unless punctuation is spoken ("period...new para") the spoken words will be "run on". However, this can be corrected manually when completed. Will transcribe multiple voices although I believe it "trains itself" over time to work best with primary user. If users announce themselves ("new paragraph. Rick Henderson speaking" the rough transcript will have more clarity.

**Q: how often (if) does it crash? I have that problem with Dragon 12.**
A: like I said before if you've ever read any of my question and answers. I've had Dragon from the beginning and there was a problem with 12 crash, but I don't think it was really the program more like how it's set up. If you open it the same way all the time you don't have a problem when you open it up in different ways. It would give you a problem, you'll find it when you load the program. It will give you different instances to start the program in Windows 8.1. I started from the start screen, not from the desktop. When I did I would have problems with it. Loading or not recognizing me. Once I got on 12.5 was a little better and I believe 13 is even more so. 10 and 11 didn't have these problems. So each generation has its little quirks about how it starts and the recovery process is a lot better now if it should go down I usually just and the CD and have the program fix the problem. But to your question 12. I was suggest that you uninstall the program with the uninstall or from the website and reinstall and remember only start the program from one instance I start on Windows 8.1 from the start screen, not the desktop and give the program time to really start don't start pushing the button over and over expecting it to speed things up. Let the program started its own time. Everyone's in a hurry and that hurry will give you a problem. These are just my observations and problems. I've solved in this manner. But remember, if you're going to uninstall the program uninstall it completely so that your key will be freed , otherwise you use them all up the Dragon people are pretty good about helping you out, but you've got to be diligent about what you're doing

**Q: does it work with windows xp**
A: I use it with Windows 8, but I would assume it would work with XP.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works as Advertised
*by J***R on August 7, 2017*

I am in the process of writing a book and am a horrible typist. So it's taking forever. I stumbled upon this software while reading some writing blogs. I almost didn't buy it because of the negative reviews but I figured, for the price, why not? I purchased the disk version, used an external optical reader to load it on to my computer and it worked out of the box, as advertised. I was afraid I was going to have problems getting it loaded because it took literally 10 full minutes before it started installing. Perhaps people are just aborting the process when it appears to lock up? I went through a couple of screens with the install wizard before it appeared to freeze but I just left it alone and it eventually loaded with no problem. Of course, I have a newer computer so that may make a difference. I have had no problem getting it to work at all and the accuracy is exceptional. Certainly far better and quicker than anything I could produce. I have a relatively neutral accent and am a public speaker so I do tend to speak and enunciate my words clearly. I only use Dragon for Word to work on the book; I did not load it onto my browser. My productivity has gone up exponentially! I am not using the headset that came with the box; instead I am using a $60 Microsoft headset I bought off Amazon a while back. Using the headset makes working on my book as mobile as working on my laptop - even when dictating while at my son's baseball practice, the headset did not pick up anything other than my voice (not the music, coaches, kids or external sound). I did let the program peruse other documents, including my current book draft, so that it could learn my writing style and pick up some vocabulary words. Between that and reading the passage that Dragon provides to train the program, it took all of 10 minutes to "train." I went back and forth on whether to get the home or premium version. For my needs, this home version is perfect because I'm not going to use this for Excel, nor am I going to use an external voice recorder. Finally, I began practicing law over 20 years ago and always used dictation (because I couldn't type) so relearning dictation commands hasn't been difficult. Dragon comes with a cheat sheet to help you while you learn the commands. I'll keep it with me till I learn everything and then store it away. If you're thinking about purchasing this program, I'd say go for it. For the price of a family meal at a restaurant, its a relatively low risk investment.
