Wrap the polished enameled wire around the nail to leave two ends of the wire -- the coil 4. Connect one end of the battery box to the enameled wire end of the coil and the other end to the switch, and then connect the switch to the other end of the coil. Install the battery after the circuit is connected. 5. Hold the end of the nail with one hand and the switch with the other hand to turn on the power. Move the nail to the place where the small iron piece is placed and see if it can hold the small iron piece. 6. As in experiment 5, move the nail near the compass or shake the nail to see what happens to the compass. But other than that it’s good. It’s not very strong, and I had a very strong suspicion about tip of the nail being magnetic, but maybe it was due to me putting a permanent magnet on it and then turning the device on. It works. But I did find a hair in it as I was opening the package, it wasn’t my hair because mine isn't straight.
